Laguna´s and good sushi!

... the bus again. Return tickets to Managua and back to San Jose cost $46US. There was also a ticket system for luggage which was comforting.

When we got off the bus in Managua there were plenty of hostels to choose from around the Tica Bus terminal however they were very disappointing, showers consisting of a pipe with a trickle of water coming out the wall and unfinished cement floors. The bedrooms seemed to be fine but often with shared bathrooms whereby you ...

Baby steps towards improving obstetrical health

... in invierno, or the rainy season, (which started about the time I arrived). The locals
here tell me that in October and November, the roads are impassable;
the water levels get so high that some have to leave their homes in
search of higher ground (not to mention that the water is contaminated
by all the garbage that is strewn all over the place - there is no
garbage collection system, nor a landfill). A plethora of other
problems ...

A H1N1 descends on Las Salinas

... as an emergency medical technician, was able to take down
necessary health-related information. I also visited individual houses
with my supervisor to notify the population of the positive case and to
educate them on prevention methods. As we were going around to other
hotels, we discovered that none of them had gotten wind of this news.
This situation needed to be rectified immediately, as the tourism
industry is the interface ...

now THIS is what I call a beach

... VERY questionable) – depending on the tide, sometimes the bridge is underwater… wrestle with mangroves – but vale la pena (it’s worth it) for…these:

It’s a beach of a thousand faces – every time ago, it shows a different side of itself, and – I think the pictures speak for themselves. It has actually been cited as one of the best surf spots in the world ...

Welcome to the dark side...

... to return to Managua), plus Martita and I did 4 hours worth of house visits to collect census data - we record all the names and remarkable medical history for the members of the family, and do a brief analysis of their living conditions - where they get their water/if it's treated (the community only gets 8 hours of water per day - the energy costs required to keep the pump running all day are too high for the community), how they dispose of their garbage (mind you ...

you are living WHERE?

... from 26-14,
we have one dog named Neyo, who is really just an overgrown puppy. I have to admit I am not particularly fond of slobbery things, but by the end of my stint here, Neyo blundered his way into my heart... and CHICKENS. (I don't know why, but I was particularly tickled by this fact) Definitely wasn't laughing after my first night at the house though... the rustic image of waking up to the crowing of the rooster? totally shattered ...

Kayaking to Monkey Island

... enjoying my time here and I think it is a wonderful way to spend these last days here in Nicaragua. My days consist of lounging around in a hammock with a good book, drinking fresh coconut juice straight from the tree, meeting other travelers and occassionally kayaking on the lake.

There are two islands that I love to visit... they are known as monkey island because they ...

So, This Bull Walks into a Bar...

... And there usually arenīt switch backs. The trails go straight up, and the distinction between trail and water drainage is fuzzy. This was such a trail.

We spent the whole time squishing up, stepping in puddles, sliding around, clamoring over 4 foot rises, grabbing muddy roots to keep balanced. We did this for a while, about 1200 meters over 5 ridiculous km. The top was beautiful, though. A little laguna in the dormant crater and clouds rolling around in the green mountains. The ...
