The next day I wake up and try to re-boot the system, assured th**e must be a problem with short-t**m memory, but no, ev**y time I re-run the movie it comes out the same- red flashing lights and a souvenir police report. But it's more than a movie; I’ve still get some phantom pain emanating from some undefined place in the region wh**e my legs must c**tainly meet. I’ve got a lump in my throat and a lump in my gut, mental tissue automatically wrapping itself around the psychologica...
Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa hardiek We left the Lion Park today and the volunteer group will spend a couple of days of leisure based in Pretoria.
Overall, the Lion Park was a great experience and I was sad to leave. I became very fond of Zoe, the friendly meerkat, whose enclosure I visited a couple of times a day. Most of the visitors and volunteers were focused on the lions, so I got quite a bit of a time with her by myself. Meerkats are very social animals and Zoe had lots to say -- those of you who have seen Meerkat M...
I forgot to mention that they had hyenas at the Lion Park as well. The cool thing was that one young female was raised with a litter of lion cubs because otherwise she would have been on her own, which wouldn't have been nice for her. She was in with the 9-month-old cubs, living in the enclosure adjoining the younger cubs that we got to go in with, so we saw her all the time, napping in the sun with her lion buddies. Not clear if she knows she's a hyena. Since I could see her up close through...
Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa naomi7 Today we went on a game drive at a reserve about 2 hours away. We saw a bunch of white rhinos and some giraffes and various antelope up close, but only one elephant and one hippo, both quite far away. No cats, although we were told lions and a leopard had been seen this morning. It was cool to see the rhinos, but it was a rather exhausting day stuck in a cramped, crowded van and I was glad when it was over.
On the way to the reserve, we stopped at the Chameleon Village market, a great ...
The drive from Jo-burg airport to Pretoria only takes about 30 minutes. The highway was flowing well as I had missed the rush hour crawl. Apparently it is so bad that people who commute between the two cities often travel before 6am or face a long, long, long, slow, hot journey. The landscape was ecologically barren and built-up. You can't really tell that you are so high above sea-level as there are no mountains. The horizon is flat and shows the parched brown land that signifies we are very...

... any electricity to pass through the power cord to the computer. I had planned to start writing an electronic journal during the afternoon but now I didn't have a way to work on it. So, I went out on the little patio at the back of my room and read my book until it was time for Mike to arrive. It was sunny out there with a little breeze. Notice the evergreen is swaying a little. Here's another picture of one of those noisy water birds. Once Mike ...

Johannesburg, South Africa khedges... for our first challenge for the MHMF. We decided we would try to identify 100 species of birds by the time we finish the trip. With the huge diversity of the wildlife at the Kruger National Park, by the time we left there we had identified 113 species! Our idea now is to continue to identify as many species as we can while we're away and see how many we can manage. It will depend a little on the availability of identification books in the different countries. We listed ...
Pretoria, South Africa estherbunny... blesbok and seen the Springbok running we pursued the Springbok and seen two rams fighting. I was lucky enough to be able to shoot first from the truck I was on and had my first African animal of the trip down. A very nice Black Springbok. Within a couple hours all three hunters had taken Black Springbok. After lunch we returned to the field to help cull some regular Springbok for the Billtong market. Bill ...
