... this goes a long way to explaining the problems here with traffic!

After a 20 hour bus/ferry combo I arrived in the bus station and was picked up by Jorge Jnr… the son of Alejandro’s dad’s friend. We went over to their house and then got into his 11 seater minivan and headed off for a 10-strong family day out in La Llovizna National Park. The plan had been to go out on his Jorge Snr ...

Cuidad Bolivar and some reflections on Venezuela

Our last two days in Venezuela... Picked a posada from the Lonely Planet and grabbed a cab from the airport. Our washing was able to walk there on it's own. 2 weeks and not a crumb of OMO in sight and our clothes honk to high heaven. We spent the evening lurking around in our last items of clothing and having budget backpacker dinners as we ran out of US dollars and have nothing to exchange on the black market for local currency. Reluctantly had ...

Cuidad Bolivar

- Time to move and today it is a short hop of about 400kms to get to the town of Cuidad Bolivar, quite famous for a few different things. The trip was reasonably flat so quite fast which is a bonus since the countryside is quite boring. It was quite a relief to see the huge bridge that crosses the Orininoco River just upstream from the town. On arrival we knew we had to go to the airport to see if we could park in a common spot at Posada La Casita ...

YAY! We are in Venezuela! And its raining!!! Arrived in Caracas early in the morning and our Belgium mate helped organise our bus to Ciudad Bolívar. Lucky the next bus was departing in only one and a half hours. So we stood in the line for the bus tickets. The ticket office didnt open until 20 minutes before departure. By the time we got to the front of the line it was 5 mins till departure. Got our tickets and ran to the bus, the very small bus ...

Arrival at the other end of Venezuela

We passed through Maracay at about 1am and through El Tigre at 8am. The bus stopped again for guess what....another security check. I kept my bum in my seat and all went well. Finally we arrived in Ciudad Bolivar. Both our digestive systems needed tending to. I knew there would be a race to the bathroom when we got to Posada Don Carlos. Its a pity the taxi driver decided to give us the scenic tour! He was actually the second taxi. The first guy ...

... not to touch it! But I hadn´t! We realised there was some inflight entertainment - El Capitano got us up into the clouds then started reading his newspaper with the odd nudge of the controlls from time to time! Landing in Canaima was cool! The airport terminal was a palm thatched hut with some locals drinking coke and the odd stray dog running accross the runway. We were met by Oswaldo (Ozzy) our guide and taken to our camp. After a refreshing swim on ...

... was also on her way to Angel Falls, so we went to the airport together to check for tours. After a lot of bartering with the two agencies that were open, going from one to the other, time and time again to tell one about the newest price the other had given us, and whether they'd give us a better price. Doing that a few times, we ended up getting the 3 day long tour to Canaima National Park, including Angel Falls, for 950.000 Bs instead of 1.190.000 Bs ($190 USD vs $238 USD ...
