Monemvasia - Single Gate

... the mountains on a series of deserted dirt roads- not paved roads, but dirt roads that were in terrible shape. The problem was that we were already 2 hours into the drive and far away from any alternate route. We had a fairly full gas tank and drove slowly for many miles until finally finding a paved road again. So, what should have taken 3 hours took about 6 hours. However, we finally arrived at Monemvasia.

Monemvasia is actually a small ...

where Paris and Helen had started their romance

POLSKI: Po Sparcie udalismy sie w strone jaskin Diros. Ominelismy (podobno piekna) Mistre, bo w slonecznym skwarze zlapalismy dwoch Bulgarow - muzykow, ktorzy o 13tej przywiezli nas do Githionu.

Greece

My best friend during Elementary School was Nick Kastanias, whose family is proud of its Greek heritage. Nick's Dad (Mr. K) retired from his job in south Florida and moved back to Greece 11 years ago. He was nice enough to host and entertain me during my fantastic stay in Greece - which largely centered on his lovely hometown of ...

Kardimili to Gythio

Thursday 8th. We are the only guests, and we are treated to a family breakfast. Most of the Spireas Family joins with us, their daughter is fluent in English, and she entertains us during our wonderful repast. Breakfast isn't included in the room rate, but the € 2.50 price tag is more than reasonable. After some photography in the exuberant garden, we take the narrow alleys behind the hotel to visit Old Kardimili. On the way we see an elderly lady up ...

... small villages dotted along the coast - all looking very picturesque - and we see the Ohi Day celebrations taking place in all of them. There's not much tourism here, just the villages and a few holiday housing settlements that seem to be largely owned by Greeks. Despite its beauty, and probably because it has so few beaches, this coast does not appear to have been "discovered" by the package holiday European crowds that cram the Greek Islands in the summer ...

... in a pension with a great view over the city. Lots of steps however to get there although we did use our car some to get up and down. Today we drove back to Athens and will return to Minneapolis tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing everybody and hopefully have some get-togethers on the deck. & nbsp; Bye for now, Dave and Nancy

Mystras -- my own Ithaca

... quiet. Very quiet. Nothing open. No one around. When I arrived at the bus stop, outside the town's only travel agency, I sat down on the wooden bench and started to update my journal. I checked my watch for the date and was puzzled that the date read 4/2 -- yesterday. Then it dawned on me -- my watch displays the date only in the mode in which it displays the home time zone, not in the mode displaying the time zone for the current location. I had synchronized the alarm to ...

The Greek bus system, lessons 5 through infinity

Traveling by bus in Greece...I compare it to base jumping -- you get on a bus, not knowing whether you'll be able to make connections with the bus to your next destination, taking it on trust that you'll eventually get where you want to go. I had a pretty clear idea where I wanted to go in the lower Peloponnese -- Mystras and Monemvasia -- and I knew I wanted to take buses (or, more to the point, I knew I didn't want to rent a car, having read warnings about the ...

... of the large humped rock. However due to a force 6 and a jetty collapse we couldn't stop, so it was back upwind 10 miles to Ierakas and an excellent late night fish dinner. Oh well, we'll just have to go back via land! We then spent two nights at anchor, at Kiparissi which has the starriest sky ever against toothy cliffs, and finally round the corner from PH at Hinitsa Bay where I discovered that I am ...

GYTHIO - MANI TOWERS IN SOUTH PELOPONISOS

It is September, and we have decided to visit MANI this time. Our first stop is at GYTHIO, where we have lunch. Gythio is a beautiful port and so our lunch includes my favorite dish which is KALAMARI, sea shells, mussles, and of course my favorite starter OUZO.
