Really in the bush now

The morning we awoke to a thunder storm.. yep it was raining and the lightening was so bright it hurt your eye's even with them being closed, then the thunder came.. on my God.. the biggest bangs I have even heard..

Off we head.. we had read a note in the dunny that said we could follow the Kwai Community Road direct to the North Gate entrance to the Okavango delta National Park.. seems straight forward… We seem hell bent on finding the only dam roads that ...

My Birthday in the Okavanga Delta!

Today is my birthday!!! Which means I didn't even mind waking up at 5:45am this morning, in fact, it just increased the length of the day, woohooo. We were going on a bush walk. As we headed out with our guide we were treated to a gorgeous sunrise, the light beams spreading out over the barren land and the clouds spread out in a pregnant sky. We hadn’t walked far when we saw wildebeest, a whole herd of them, and as we ...

Watch out for the Crocs!

We got up at 6am and packed up our tent and a small rucksack to take with us into the Okavanga Delta. At 7am an open aired truck came and we loaded up all our stuff and headed to the Mokoro landing site. There, we met our guides who helped us unload our stuff and then one by one would approach us and invite us to their Mokoro. Gabe and I were one of the last chosen and were approached by one of the women; I felt like I ...

Moremi, the pride of southern Africa

... try their luck at the Central Kalahari Game Reserve where we'd received reports of almost guaranteed daily lion, cheetah and leopard sightings. K and I didn't have any extra days to spare and so decided to stay in Moremi one more night. And so we headed out in separate directions the following morning for another game drive but fate had it that all four vehicles would end up coming back together at exactly the same spot. Right in front of us was a beautiful male ...

North Gate and that infamous bridge

... they would have waited, most of the day I should think. Our car didn't look as bad if we could just prize the wing off the tyre we might be able to limp to the campsite. It was then as if by magic our saviour appeared; a South African, tinny in hand - and it was only 9.30! Magically he had a wrench and managed to prize the bodywork away from the tyre. He muttered something in Afrikaans and got us to put up the bonnet. He pulled a few pipes around and told us that we were ...

Okovango Delta

After a long drive from Chobe we arrived in Maun at a nice campsite with good bar facilities. Maud had seem to come down with a bad flu....another malaria victim ? So after setting up the tent she hit the sack and I set about trying to restore Tim's MP3 player with some tunes after it's hard drive had given up the ghost a few days back. After a weird meal of what was supposed to be chicken kebabs but ended up being a stir fry (tasty nonetheless) it was a reasonably early ...

Okavanga Delta

May 14th: Today started early again as we got picked up at 0700 and driven and hour and a half into the Okavange Delta National park to a local mokoro camp. Here we unloaded our supplies for the next two days, partnered up and found a mokoro driver. The ride took about two hours and covered 10 km through the winding waters of the delta. As soon as we unloaded our stuff at our campsite we had an elephant sighting. Just 50 meters from our camp ...

... along the delta for 2 hours before arriving at our campsite. The next 3 days were amazing!! We set up camp with our polers (who were all from a local village) and spent the next days in the wilderness. (with no toilets or showers!!) We did sunset walks, saw baboons, elephants ...

Mokoros in the Delta

... the night. The ride in mokoro was relaxing especially since there was no work involved by us! We relaxed at the campsite during the heat of the day. At about 4pm, we went on a game walk in search of various animals (elephant, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe & others) for about two hours. Our game walk unfortunately had very few sightings with the exception of the ever present zebra and wildebeest, who always travel together. We ...

safari

... a few days in the middle of the veldt. But I doubt I could've done that type of trip for a week or two, the way many people do, because I started to tire of seeing all the animals. (There's just got to be a limit to how many impala you can see in one day and still be excited.) I'm glad I went, and I'd like to go on safari again sometime (perhaps in South Africa or up north in Kenya), but I was also excited to move on to the next destination: Vic Falls.
