Albatros and penguins

... a few in there nests and the chicks had all hatched within the last week and they were so cute and fluffy, we also saw some coming in from the sea and going out to sea. it was a very nice plcae and we walked around in trenches so we could get really close to the penguin and see them for good photos.

this morning i went to cadburys world and toured round the chocolate factory, as this is where Cadburys is made for the southern ...

Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula

... from the beach of Penguin Bay. In an amazing moment we watched a local sea lion hunting them in the breaking surf just out in the bay and actually saw a kill – this was pretty gruesome but transfixing. The poor guide was not happy about losing one of their penguins but I guess nature just does it’s thing.

Dinner was this time had at Plato – a top recommendation from ...

... the frigid depths of the New Zealand winter. On the beach, we witnessed a comical break dancing duo. Throughout their performance they instructed the audience to clap along to the music. Noticing that we were, in fact, white, the break dancers told us to simply follow the lead of the black guy beside us. This helped marginally. The boardwalk is a colorful place - the picturesque Pacific on one side and a myriad of shops and ...

Elm Wildlife Tour

... 3.4 meters, average body length of 1.2 meters, average weight of 8kg, and mate for life. The oldest one they have is "grandma' who is 62 years old. Life starts with an egg that weighs an impressive 450g. From when the chick hatches the parents work flat out to feed it. Indeed its weight gain is so rapid and it gets so fat that it can't even stand let alone fly. At 8 months it is fully grown and can weigh up to 12kg - clearly its not only humans that strugle with ...

... etc. At each stop, we got a sample bar for our goody bag. The highlight was going to the tower to see a ton of chocolate fall from the ceiling to the ground... After lunch (of chocolate), Jackie and I went to the Public Art Gallery which was perfect for the overcast day. There were exhibits from European Artists as well as Japanese and of course, NZ. It was a perfect size museum... not too overwhelming, and not too few and ...

South Island Part 7: Dunedin

... guy who took us round barely paused for breathe all tour, let alone between sentences. I was not quite sure where one sentence ended and another begun, but he had clearly done this tour so many times that he actually sounded a bit recorded. Still, it was a good tour, and the end was tasting time. We got given a bar, and told to help ourselves, once we'd been told how to pour, and help ourselves we did for about 30 minutes! There ...

Seen Pingu and his mate!

We left Invercargill at 10am and headed off to Dunedin. On the way we had a few stop offs. Firstly was Curio Bay where we actually saw dolphins swimming. Bloody camera was too slow to catch them though! Honest! Next stop was the 'Petrified Forest'. Now I'm not sure whether this was connected to Nottingham Forest facing an away match at Real Madrid or not, but it seemed quirky. It apparently is to do with fossilised trees and not the fear of Lorna eating it or me ******* on ...

... on the 5th floor of a building with a great view of the main street. i've been trying to go at least 4 times a week, so that's been keeping me happy and healthy...cause there's not much to do at the hostel other than watch tv or read. i'm hoping to start planning the next leg of my travels in september and getting very excited to say the least. the weather in dunedin (and most of NZ, actually) has been super rainy and cold. we've been lucky and have missed out on the ...

Dun 'edin South

... grey, rainy, liberal scattering of pubs and pie shops, that sort of thing. Although that much is indeed true, in all seriousness there is somehow quite a Scots feels to the place, which, to be honest, there's probably not much point trying to explain. Go to Edinburgh, go to Dunedin, you'll feel that somehow there's a link greater than their both having 'Edin' in their names. We explored for a bit, mooching and window shopping, before fetching the computer from the van and ...
