So after Kota Kinabalu (or KK as it shall henceforth be known), we headed to the jungle for 3 days 2 nights. Or as Jim a South African guy went on a rant about, it was really only worked out a day and a bit and 2 nights.
It was a 5 hour bus ride to the middle of no-where, and we were dropped off at the side of the road beside a little cafe type thing. Not really sure what was happening next, we had something to eat, and then a minibus turned up to take us into the heart of the rai...
After freezing in China we chose Sabah as our destination to defrost, it promised white beaches with crystal clear waters, top dive sites, jungle safaries and great food. We found all of this here and so much more.
We chilled out in Kota Kinabalu for a few days before booking our dream week which included a three day jungle safari followed by 3 days learning to dive, a day diving in Sipadan (which they call heaven) and a day to relax on the island of Mabul.

After receiving three different pieces of advice we somehow managed to get a public bus to Kota Kinabatangan, a tiny town which is the gateway to the Kinabatangan River, a great place for wildlife viewing. We arrived 3 hours early so sat in a mamak stall eating noodles and watching TV before we met our fellow travellers and hopped in a van for the bumpy hour long ride along unsealed roads through the palm oil plantations which are rapidly destroying the surrounding rainforest. We stayed at th...
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia karenandpaulThere is no better way to have an eco-awakening than to go to the front line and see what's at stake. Sabah is apparently home to the world's 3rd largest rainforest but you might easily be deceived into thinking that's a lie given the hundreds of thousands of acres of palm oil plantations and logging camps. Scary sight. Nestled in among all this, however, are a couple of absolute gems, namely the Kinabatangan Nature Reserve where I did some volunteering and the Sepilok Orangutan Rehab centre....

If you shoot it in before your other pieces you loose. That's how Ben & I lost the first game. We still kicked butt and beat Jessie and Rien in the 2nd game. I think we were all tired and trying to loose the game so Ben would be happy we played the game to the end. I was ready to give up about half way thru and could see the other ...

It was great to learn more about the orang-utans and to get the chance to witness a mother and baby at the feeding platform, along with a lot of cheeky monkeys! Then it was off to the airport again to fly to Kota Kinabalu, our only concern being the ever increasing size of Will's insect bite.

So we all just kind of eased back a bit and waited to see what her next steps would be. She then climbed onto the leg of one of the guys standing next to me and proceeded to very deftly open the button on his pants pocket and rifle through it. When she was done, she walked with us down the path towards the feeding platform and then left us once again for the forest. It was ...
