Mt. Nicolas, Sheep Paradise!!!

Hello from Mt. Nicolas Sheep Station, on the shores of Lake Wakatipu! We arrived here yesterday on the steamship TSS Earnslaw, which was built in 1912, the same year as the Titanic. Luckily, this ship never sank and still operates today. We boarded in Queenstown and crossed the lake to Mt. Nicolas. It was cool to see them putting coal in the huge fires in the bottom of the ship to make the engines run. It is much warmer today and very sunny, so we sat on deck for part of the trip. When we got...

Sheep Station Life, NZ-style

For the last couple of days, I got to see what it is really like at a sheep station. First, we went out fishing on the lake. Bruce taught me how to fish with a rod and reel and once I got the hang of it, it was really fun. We did not catch any fish, but we did see some huge ones jumping out of the water. We had a great view of Mt. Earnslaw, which is where part of the Lord of the Rings was filmed. It has a huge ice field on the top all year round. After fishing, we visited the sheep dogs and p...

We went on a 'luge' to get back down half the mountain- it's like a toboggon/3 wheeled go kart, which was really good fun!! We then had some lunch in the cafe with the best views of Queenstown and then went back down and looked around the town- it's really ...

One day at the cost of another

... yes sat, the great thing about this walk is that you can do the first 450m of up, on the Gondala. The man selling me the ticket told me all about the feral goat problem they have on Ben Lomand, I didn’t ask what the problem was but anyway him and his buddies were going to go and drive them off a cliff or something similar, I confess I wasn’t really listening but there as definitely something about goats.,
Anyway with this accuate ...

Settling in

... in waterproof trousers and a rain coat. Thanks to our friend from Whistler, who sorted us out with skis and boots while we are here, we have some money left in our pockets to try and pick up some clothing bargains so this only has to be a temporary measure.

There are two main places to ski here 'The Remarkables’ and ‘Coronet Peak’ both of which we have explored now and offer spectacular views of the surrounding valley. We have ...

Day 8 Part 2 - Milford Sound to Queenstown

... like a 'Snickers' which was Vanilla Vodka, Kahlua and Grenadine and then we had baileys with chambourd! We wondered how he was getting away with giving us these free shots but it turned out his brother was manager of the bar!! His shift finished and we hung out with him and his friends which was cool. Got bought quite a few drinks and we ended up at The World Bar, sister to a bar of the same name in Kings Cross, Sydney, and stayed up till about 5am. It was a very fun night!

... opportunities - we now have no money to be able to afford the exhortionate ****-up parties aboard the great barrier reef tourist pontoons - however a visit to an information centre and a weather warning unfortunately means us having to change route once more, away and inland, where we may well get a little bored, but at least we won't get wiped out by a cyclone! anyway, after getting very upset at this major detour, we decide that actually all is not lost just yet, and that at ...

PICTON TO QUEENSTOWN

... for work. Nothing came up that day but since we're pretty sure we have some work lined up for us at the end of March into April.

On our way to the west coast from Blenheim we stopped at a campsite looking for a place to stay. Brian had read me the description of this place and it said something like "swim suits optional" so that made my wonder but what the heck, we still checked it out. So...we pulled up and got out of the car but didn't see ...
