... schools they attended no more, places of huge personal historical importance gone, the church where parent's were married, gravestones destroyed, graves disturbed..... Where are the people who lived and worked in the city centre, who worshiped in the churches, the students and teachers from the destroyed schools, the elderly who had to move from their care homes? On the morning we left Mount Cook, we stopped at the Alpine Memorial to all the people who have lost theirs lives in the National Park. It was very sad and thought provoking, and highlighted how dangerous mountaineering is, even today. Some of the plaques were as recent as 2004.
