... amazing depth of 6000 feet. Soon the forests opened up into meadows, some with little monsoon-fed ponds. As we drove south the meadows widened. Near the DeMotte campground, there was a surprising site for Arizona: a bison herd of probably 150 head grazing. I found later that they were brought here from Yellowstone 100 years ago by a rancher who cross bread them with cattle. He wanted to create a super cattle, able to withstand harsh winters.
