Clean, tidy and well-kept. A bit pricey, the prices are set according to being the only accomodation available in Milford Sound. I booked accomodation, cruise, breakfast and lunch in advance for 159 NZD, which is the cheapest deal in the long run.

Lots of critters scurrying about at night.. But what do we expect its nature.

We stayed in a twin room with shared bathroom for one night. The room was fairly basic (twin single beds, not much else) but a couple of nice Milford Sound photos on the walls and European pillows on the beds were nice touches. There was a heater (we only used for an hour or so but it was nice to have) and the beds were comfortable. The bathrooms had plenty of toilet and shower stalls and a couple of hairdryers. A couple extra hooks and a bigger shelf in the shower stalls would be nice. The bathrooms were cleaned regularly. There is a nice lounge and dining area, the staff were friendly and helpful, there is a cafe with reasonable food. We went kayaking early morning on the day we checked out and were able to store our bags AND have a shower when we came back to the Lodge wet and cold.

The only drawback was the kitchen which was far too small for the number of people staying at the lodge and not very well equipped. Overall this was a very nice place to stay and certainly allows you to experience Milford Sound in a way that you can't on a day trip from Queenstown or Te Anau.

Considering that it is the only accommodation in Milford Sound, the owners could let this hostel slide and people would still come. But, they are doing anything but.in our two nights there, we saw new furniture, new signs, and new artwork. Our room was a backpacker room, with four bunk beds, a table and a chair, but it was clean and comfortable. The bathrooms and kitchens were clean, and the scenery is unbeatable.

Good location, lovely helpful staff, mostly dorm accommodation. We wanted private rooms, but there aren't many and they get snapped up very quickly. With 5bunks and 1 single bed in a family small room, so 11 people, it got quite stuffy. Added to that, Milford is plagued with sandflies, so the windows had to remain firmly shut the entire time.

We woke up very early to the sound of engines after a very noisy night with the bang and clatter of the ship around us. 60 mm of rain had fallen overnight. We walked upstairs for breakfast after packing up all of our stuff. We then ate a massive buffet breakfast as we cruised back through the Doubtful Sound in the pouring rain with signs of fresh …

So today was the big day where I would drive for the first time since I got my driver's license 10 months ago. As if driving alone for the first time wasn't scary enough, put in driving in the opposite side of the road than what I'm used to, bad Asian drivers around you and tricky mountain roads into the equation, and it would make quite a few …

On Friday (8th) we did a shortish walk along north shore of L.Wakatipu, before finally bidding it farewell and the wind setting in.
