Pork Chops!!

... cooked over the fire and so dam good, it was so incredible it was hard to stop eating! With the pork, was butternut squash, potatoes, some veggie mix stuff, and some other veggie smoked over the fire with herbs and cheese. If I were on Death Row waiting to be executed, that would probably be my third choice for a meal. #1 would probably be the meal I had in Santa Barbara CA which was from ...

If the petrol station man, the camp manager, Omar the Egyptian, and everyone else in Livingstone told you that there was no fuel until Lusaka would you believe them? Me and Dave did but Robin thought he would try his luck. So we had to buy this stuff for his bike of the black market guys that looked and smelled like pain thinners. It cost 90 000 kwakkers (something ...

The Moorings Campsite Monze

... route from the camp, up the farm track past the farmhouse and the pigpens, and back down to the camp. Another short walk from the main driveway by the campsite is to continue up towards the farmhouse and continue a little bit further and you will reach the ladies craft centre.

Thea and Tom, her late husband, have been very involved in community development in the area. Thea is a doctor and she has a clinic, she helped to start the local school and the ...

Big concrete structure at Kariba- Dam!

... a kilometre, or about the length of six football pitches stood end to end- and the twenty-one metre thick arch contains nearly one billion cubic metres of concrete. As we rounded the last corner leading up to this massive monument, I was completely taken aback by its utter enormity.

The second thing that springs to your attention as you step on to the dam is the contrast in views from either direction. Upstream to the West sits the ever-placid Lake Kariba, a vast carpet dyed with ...

(Accidentally) Country No. 97: Zimbabwe

... by both countries. We left our passports at Zambian border control and drove to view the dam. People can walk on the Dam and reach the other side, which is the territory of Zimbabwe. But only when reaching the top of the hill on the other side of the Dam, we would encounter Zimbabwean border control. So off I walked along the dam ...

Victoria Falls

... hotel property-Royal Livingstone. It is absolutely gorgeous!! We watched the sun set over the falls along with the hippos. Livingstone is the adventure capital of the world-well, right after Queenstown. On our second day we planned a ½ day white water rafting trip along the Zambezi. Nine rapids ranging from Class 1-5, five being the most intense. Steve, also known as Captain Carnage by his Bundu Adventure buddies, was our river guide. Again, here comes another example ...

The Mine

... to the mine when my uncle Charlie mentioned it in an off hand manner several days before. Charlie is my dad's younger brother who has been living at the mine for the last several years doing little mining but supervising the conversion of the clinic. The drive down is a good distance of approximately that between Ottawa and Toronto and my dad and I were catching a lift with the Kariba Minerals general manager of mining operations, a Mr. Mansa. For the most part the ...

Rafting Mania

... have been here before)! This time I am knocked away and caught in a whirlpool which takes me under and up, under and up etc etc. As I look up there is a safety rope coming my way - thank christ I am exhausted!! Back on the boat and everyone has a laugh about it. The rest of the rapids were as fierce but there was no way I was going to thown off - this river might be the wildest river in the world - but it really ****** me off! As we got ...

... pretty cool. Spent Saturday night on a cruise on the Zambezi river and watched the sun set which really does rival those sunsets of Nepal. Hope the photos turn out ok...Have meet heaps of people and believe me there are professional 'Hostellers' out there - people who just hang around hostels drinking and sleeping - not a bad life! Will try and keep upto date - but not sure how the internet access is going to be in the middle of Botswana. Talk soon and be safe
