Fort Nelson, BC to Liard Hot Springs

July 7, 2008 Fort Nelson, BC to Liard Hot Springs Provencial Park, BC- Alaska Highway Vacation Day 7 Today has been a remarkable day. It started with the traditional waking up on what would be EST but out here on PST it was 5:00. We did manage to get an early start to the day with a nice breakfast at the Ramada in Fort Nelson. We hit the road early by about 7 am PST. It less than 10 minutes on the road we saw a black bear on the side of the road. We stopped and watched for about 5 minutes bef...

Sikanni Chief to Laird Hot Springs via Alaska Hwy.

Long drive in store for today. Due to our RV misbehaving, we could only do half of today's drive. This meant that today we had to do today's drive and half of yesterday's. And on the Alaska Highway. Since the RV was already hooked to the truck, packing-up the RV did not take too much time. By 8:30 we were on our way. Though we drove over 300 miles today on a small two lane highway full of steep mountains and valleys, tones of curves and many animals, due to the scenery of the place, it did no...

Skagway to the Cassiar Highway

Our plan was to leave Skagway early this morning and drive halfway to Stewart, BC (about 700 miles total). There is not much in the way of civilization along this route, so we figured on fueling up in Skagway (at much lower US prices), as well as purchasing a few groceries. The challenges began when we tried to slide in. Our coach has four slides, and the bed slide would retract just about 3 inches and then ratchet like it was all the way in. After several attempts ...

Last Night in the Yukon, We think

We drove in a light rain all the way from Teslin, Yukon to Watson Lake which is just north of the border between the Yukon and British Columbia. It was 45 -48 degrees all the way. We had intended to drive to Fort Nelson, British Columbia today and get another almost 500 hundred miles behind us. We didn't really want to drive up into the high country in the rain and we also noticed though that our 5th wheel hitch was not sitting right. We decided to ...

On our way

... Valdez to Tok. We left Tok this morning at 7:00 and made it across into Canada with no problem. The road between Tok and Lake Kluane was very rough. Lake Kluane is so beautiful, it is hard to stop taking pictures. We bounced along sometimes at 25 mph and then at 60 and then again back to 25. We saw a black bear along the way. We also saw a wild horse. I almost jumped out of the truck before Les got it completely stopped, he was so beautiful. When we stopped, he ran off a ...

Prince Rupert and beyond

... By the time we went to bed there were 6 boats in the anchorage, including a beautiful blue hull sailboat “Grace” that we had seen in Auke Bay, Alaska.

6:15 AM On or way out of Codville Lagoon we picked up our shrimp pot and had 11 shrimp. Yummy! Just enough for dinner tonight. We made the decision to skip Fury Cove and go for the long haul down Fitzhugh Sound, Queen Charlotte Sound and Queen Charlotte ...

Only 5 more sleeps!

It's Easter Sunday and the weather here on little Saltspring Island is blustery enough to keep any Easter Bunny hiding in the nearest burrow.  That won't stop Jackson and Harrison from searching the bunny trail in their raincoats and boots.   Hard to believe that Derek and I will be boarding a flight in only 5 more sleeps.  We fly from Victoria ...

BOWRON LAKES Canoe Expedition (Brokeback Bowron!)

... down by dawn and we remained dry and warm in the tent.)  This is a true wilderness park--in the eight days on the lakes and rivers, we saw just as many moose as we did other canoeists (six of each), some eagles, a few black bears...awesome!   On the way back to Vancouver, we stopped by Pemberton/Mount Currie to see my pal Penelope.  A really great trip!

Wolfed, Grizzled and Saddened

As forecast, it did start to rain last evening and continued through the night. As I loaded the bike in the morning it was a race to stay dry. I was up at 5:30 am in order to be at the dock by 6:00 am for boarding the ferry Malapina, a part of the Alaska Ferry Service, at 7:00 am. There were two Princess cruise ships in harbour and one Holland America, and as we left the dock another Holland America arrived. Skagway is truly a tourist town set up to satisfy the cruise ship ...

Day 66 Teslin Lake Canada

Day 66 Skagway - Teslin Lake. This morning we a little sleep in until 8am (yeah right sleep in some say!) the plane trip over the glacier National park was booked for 10:30am. We arrived in plenty of time to wait for the pilot to fly in from Haines, he arrives, loads us up and away we go. I am sure the pictures taken will not at all do justice to the views we had on this ride. The ...
