Travel day, back to Mendoza. Bus not till 1pm, so wondered round the town and found a nice place for breakfast. On the way figured out that we had lost the phrase book. ... tube is that the patch that we'd applied to the pinch holes had failed. Part of it had slipped and created a crease through which the air was escaping. We carefully cut and removed the portion that had slipped and then proceeded to use one of the 3" in diameter monster patches that the Gomero presumably uses to fix truck tires. At this point, given our track record, no patch could be too large to seal the tube.

... a large RV towing a boat happened upon us and became a part of our 'situation'. The man's name was "Fausto" (in retrospect, I've tried not to dwell too much on the name, but kind of eery...). He was willing to provide us air from the spare in his RV, but to no avail, the tube was shot and wouldn't hold air no matter our attempts at patching (we later determined that there were several small holes that likely when the tire blew).
