Our entrance to an enkang and another way of life

Patrick urged us not to aim our cameras at the Maasai people. I was not altogether sympathetic; they choose to dress and decorate themselves as they do and they also choose to sell their images to tourist photographers at every opportunity. Be that as it may, Patrick suggested we visit one of the many villages erected by the Maasai in the park …

The Masai Mara is the most famous of Kenya's wildlife parks albeit a little less heralded, perhaps, than Tanzania's Serengeti. The two parks are actually one, situated in the countries' hinterland, appropriately remote from any human settlement and separated only by a border line drawn by colonial powers that, as far as natural wonders and …

The Dark Knight!

December 23, 2008. Day 3. Masai Mara

There was just no question of encouraging 'yawns' after a ‘full-filling’ lunch!

Peter wanted to take us to some points which were quite far away from the Keekorok and so we had scheduled a 3 …

December 23, 2008. Day 3. Masai Mara

The dark bejewelled cloak over the Dark Continent – Africa – was still in place when I woke up, once again, a little before the 'wake up' call was scheduled at five in the morning. By the time the call came and …

In Search of a Yawn…

After breakfast and freshening up, we decided to visit the Hippo Bar again to while away the few hours before lunch. I, anyway, wanted to take some more hippo photographs, especially one of a hippo …

The keekorok Lodge blends beautifully with the park surrounding it. Projecting from its spacious lawn area there is a pathway to a hippo pool (always populated by the great beasts) and a deck walk to an elephant viewing area (from which elephant are frequently sighted). When hunger, thirst or sleep suggests enough adventure for the day, the satisfied traveler may adjourn to delightful dining, drinking and private sleeping areas. The food is splendid, served by caring staff, Tusker beer is readily at hand (at the appropriately cold temperature - despite English preferences) and the rooms are comfortable, well facilitated and decorated in big-dame style. This is first class care in the midst of nature's greatest display park. Go there!
