... compelled to buy nothing. Viva la resistance to gadgetry!
I found a Starbucks near our gate and greedily slurped on a venti Chai tea latte until Mary arrived. We scurried to the gate once she'd bought a nibbly treat and we boarded soon after. The flight took off pretty much on time and was again uneventful. A little turbulence. Check. A crying baby a few rows down. Check. Cramped quarters resulting in a ...
... that we had sacrificed sleep for no worthwhile payoff, and I regretted that I hadn’t suggested a 7 am departure.
Winter game viewing in Addo was very poor on such a cold morning, and it turned out to be the worst wildlife viewing experience I’d ever had in a game park. We only saw a few animals in the 2+ hours that we were out:
1 hyena
10 kudu, only one or two at a time
6 ostriches
4 warthogs

... so you can see the sharks and fish swimming while you eat! The best tour we did in Durban was the Zulu Village tour, organised through the hostel. This was a full day tour, including lunch and cost 40 euro. We were picked up from the hostel, brought to a supermarket (where the vegetables for lunch were bought fresh) and given time to have breakfast. Our driver also asked us to buy chocolate and sweets to give to the children who entertain us in the ...
Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa francescahunt... for you, come back in fifteen years, when the Rand is worth half its current value, and there will be a world class marina, sports clubs, and general outdoor lifestyle up for grabs. It was a whirlwind tour for sure - three days included catching up with mates, organising the next leg of my trip and some shopping. But I am safe in the knowledge that next time, there will be some new buildings, but nothing will have changed. It's still the greatest city in the world.
Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa thefiveyears... ostrich, red hartebeest, warthog, buffalo, kudu, spotted hyena, and several species of birds. In the evening, we stayed in the park for a night game drive in an open air Landrover from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. where we saw the following additional animals and birds: common duiker, black-backed jackal, eland, porcupine, springhare, bat eared fox, scrubhare, spotted eagle owl, and Egyptian ...
Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa rroesch... sex is thought to be the main way in which AIDS is spread in Africa. According to Ursula and Johann, Mr. Zuma went on to say that it's not proper to leave a woman aroused, his "justification for the rape". Ursula and Johann also told me that recently during a televised interview he said that he believes in the ABC AIDS-prevention strategy, which has been widely promulgated in both the U.S. and Africa and is the centerpiece of ...
Durban, South Africa rroesch... another truck, this one a smaller version of the one we had just spent a week on ! Then the rest of the tour group boards, all old, these ones even had hearing aids, but they were nice little old ladies at least. From there it was about a 3 hour trip through the moutains on the bumpiest road imaginable. When we reached the top we crossed the border and into a real village. The guide took us into on persons hut and ...
Durban, South Africa strawberrykWe flew from Nairobi into Johannesburg, where we picked up our hire car and negotiated our way through the streets via the 'safe way'. The next morning we headed off on our Soweto Township Tour which was a great experience. There are 5 million black people living in the township and we saw the homes of the famous residents, the church that was at the centre of some of the uprisings and the Hector Pietersen Museum. There used to be a lot of shanty shacks that they lived in, however the ...
16 days in, South Africa peteanddee... called House of Curries. I went for a roti filled with chips and chicken curry sauce that was ok. Erica got a prawn roti that was a little too tomatoe for my liking. We did however take one last Stoney ginger beer before saying goodbye to the boys and getting in the car and heading off to the airport. Unfortunately I had saved every ...
Durban, South Africa jonclark2000Happy New Year! Had a cool time in Port St Johns, courtesy of Jungle Monkey and some v v cool people.
