    ... that the waves were so big that we couldn't get out of them. They came one after the other and it was really hard for us to swim in.     ... out at noon. We visited the Kilauea Lighthouse and the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. We saw albatross, red-footed boobies, red and white-tailed Tropicbirds, Great Frigate birds, the Nene (Hawaiian Goose), and wedge-tailed shearwaters. We watched a video about the lighthouse and learned some pretty neat stuff.

    Today we will be turning in our snorkeling equipment to the Boss Frog. Before we do that, Sheila and I decided to do our last snorkeling trip to Poipu Beach State Park.     ... they are firm believers in leaving the land in a natural state. We did see, only because the pilot pointed it out, their homestead and farm. It is almost hidden on a ridge. There is also a U.S. Navy missile tracking site on the coast that is not so well hidden. Access to the beaches can only be gained by boat. Of note, all beaches in the state are public.

    Kauai is not kidding around.

    After risking our lives on land, it was time to sink beneath the sea. The shore dive on the south shore was the only diving available in April, because the crazy swells in the north this time of the year make diving too dangerous. I'd never done a shore dive, and I was excited about it. A shore dive means that you enter the water from the shore rather than by boat. This is possible because the reef is very close to the shore.
