An epic day of climbing

Today lived up to the guide's hype. We started with a shuttle from Menthon to St Etienne de Cuines where we started our ride from the parking lot of a InterMarche. We were cautioned to pace ourselves given the length of the route and the amount of climbing, so after a short spin up the valley, we tried to take it easy up the climb of Lacets du Montvernier but the road had other ideas. There really wasn't ...

... is encouraging each other and just focused on riding your own pace up these climbs. I have been very impressed with some of the riders. People you would never guess could ride a bike up a mountain turn out to be very strong. It was been fun conquering this week and getting to know people from all over the country.

As the heat continued to increase I really began struggling. We had about 4 miles left and I was definitely ready to be done for the day. On a trip like ...

... riding around here for the last few days I use “only” and “3-mile climb” in the same sentence.

I was feeling pretty good so I really pushed the pace. Our ride leader and a guy from Colombia were ahead but pretty soon everyone else was behind me. I had been riding very reserved the last few days so I took off up the mountain. I felt very good as I continued up to the top. There was a little side street that I was supposed to turn on but no one ...

... the climb up Galibier, 17 km (10.5 miles). On the major climbs there is a marker that lets you know how much is remaining and what % incline the next kilometer is. Sometimes you love these and sometimes you hate them when you realize how much further you have.

The first portion of the Galibier is relatively “easy” with 5-7% inclines. The road stretches out far ahead of you and slowly snakes around the mountain. At first I was thinking this was ...

... Epine, which was 4.2 miles long
with an avg % incline of 7.2%. Definitely a way to wake you up in the morning! From
here we did a medium length decent and began the long grind up the Col de la
Croix-Fer. The incline wasn’t too bad but it sure was long! It took us a good
60-90 minutes (with a few rest stops) to get to the top. From here there were
some amazing views of the surrounding mountains. We had a picnic lunch at the
top and took a good ...
