Jules Verne Underwater Lodge

Getting up early and: it rains cats and dogs, no good diving weather but rain only lasts 10 minutes here, right? Wrong! We drive through all the Keys in the pouring rain (do you think it always rains, when you come down from the Keys, Broekske?) But: look at that, we arrive at the Jules Verne and the sun shines! Theresa (the manager) handles us over to the diving mistress and chef and guardian angel, Jessica. We did not know well what to expect and were full of questions. Wanna know too? Well...

Florida's Heat and a Holiday Inn

... out at Epcot since that was the only park we didn't visit on Friday. We did one half of the park, but knew we were coming back to check out the firework show later. So we made our way back to the other parks so we could do the things we liked to most one last time, like Hollywood Studios Rockin Roller Coaster and Expedition Everest at the Animal Kingdom. After getting our roller coaster fix we made our way back to ...

Full moon party and Fred, Jim's new best friend.

... again. Fred kindly gave Jim some fishing tackle to use as the rod from reception was not that well equipped. Jim quickly caught a small snapper, which he put in the keep-net for Fred to use later for shark bait! After some more tips from Fred, Jim had a go at 'spinning' for the snapper and promptly caught another, which this time Fred grabbed, chopped its head off whilst it was still flapping (see video ...

Crash, bang....paradise

... Wikipedia tells me!).

We stopped for lunch at a roadside diner called 'Mrs Macs' - quirky place with good food and great service on Key Largo, the first island. We also had our first taste of Key Lime Pie here, a delicious biscuit based pie made with Key Limes and condensed milk.

We carried on another 20 miles or so to our resort, 'The Pines and Palms' on Islamorada, known as the 'Fishing Capital of the World' - needless ...

By the beach - The Keys

... a few days with $1 beers! But alas we had to head back to the Hilton as it was our last night before our next adventure to Orlando. We were sorry to say goodbye but not to all the additional charges. Parking was $12 a night and if we wanted internet it was $12 a day! Things could add up fast. The Hilton was fantastic though, the beds were so comfortable, we had a lounge area and 2 TV's! Insane!

The next day we packed up and head off up to Orlando.

MARCO... POLO? key largo?

... mayyy just be out of place in.  We pulled into a cracked-pavement parking lot, realized we couldn't just drive away and slowly peeled ourselves from the car (literally, it was about 90 degrees) and emerged into the glare of about 15 people leaning against buildings and laughing at me awkwardly trip over my flip-flops. We sprinted into the caged and bulletproofed chamber, gave the cashier $8 and got the hellll out of there before we got shot.  We apparently didn't listen to anyone who ...

The idea was to do one last dive before the trip, with my friend and buddy Fritz. Once at Quiescence, best dive shop ever, the winds (20 knots), helped us to change our minds and have a great breakfast instead at Doc's Dinner ...

Key Lime Pie & seasickness!

... headed out into open water. To start with I thought 'Hey, this isn't too bad,' but once we got out into deeper water and by the reef, boy was that boat rocking & rolling...! Fred and the kids were fine, and had a great time looking down into the glass bottom & seeing all sorts of fish & coral (including Moon jellyfish which were quite large, and the evasive Barracuda). Me, I was very intent focusing on the horizon (as instructed by the ...
