The Critchfield Family to the Kruger Park

... family who were on safari hosted you on
the 26/09/2009 through 29/09/2009, i want to thank you for a memorable
experiance. We trully had a good time, and we got some great photos of
animals and the scenery as well. We have hundreds of photos to keep our
memories sharp for a lifetime.

Mark was a great guide as he mixed in humour with his expertise regarding
the park. Our consecutive ...

The Kruger safari experience

Early on the 15th day of our journey we departed for the airport in Durban and flew to Mpumalanga airport for Kruger National Park. Here we transfered by coach to the Protea Kruger gate Hotel a beautiful open area at the registration desk was the gathering place for people going to and from their safaris. Here we ...

This is Africa: American-style

... stunning creatures. It really didn’t seem real. The pictures do not do them justice, but I hope they will begin to give you a sense of their beauty. The female wanted to get a little frisky. It was funny watching her move in and paw at her mate and listen to him let out a growl of annoyance and basically do the leopard equivalent of turning the other way (laying on his back and acting lethargic). I think it was a pretty successful couple of days – to say the least!

Skukuza Restcamp Kruger

Skukuza Restcamp, Kruger, 19th September 2009

We were up at 5am and ready for the gate to open which it did just before 6am. We decided to take the secondary road to Skukuza rather than the tar road. The weather was still cloudy and cool, but once we got to Orpen Dam the weather had changed and it was sunny and very warm again. It was very pleasant drive and we didn't see much traffic on these roads. At Skukuza we ...

It's on

... and we got better views than we did at Thornybush. At least this wasn't a total waste.

Drove around in the dark after the sun downer and every time you would see some eyes glowing in the dark, you would hear "impaaaalaaaaa." After a while it was pointless to continue driving, you knew we weren't going to see anything. Although the ranger did tell us stories about the other rangers who spotted 2 lions fighting the night before ...

Looks like the baboons came out to greet you

... up, which was fine as we didn't want to sleep the day away. Amy and I went outside to lay by the pool until lunch. The other 8 people were broken into 2 groups. A group of mid aged sisters from Brooklyn and a 2 parents from Baltimore with their daughter and her husband, who live in NY. JB and Lindsey joined the group at this time as well. Convinced they got the honeymoon chalet, turns out they were in one of the bush chalets ...

Lions, Zebras, & Impalas...... Oh My!

... noise that reminded me of a truck backing up... beeeeeeeep..... beeeeeeep........beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeep... That my dear friends drove me absolutely insane which sparked an irrational rage and blood lust that would only be quenched by this damn bat!!! So like a stupid tourist I was running around with a flash light for an hour chasing the bat from tree to tree as far away from our tent as I could... Only to have him return and keep on beeping. Eventually around midnight or one, I ...

Elephant and python at ten paces

The elephant and python Hour ten on the road; I was bored and I was hot. Driving on tar roads is great outside the park, but it feels limited within the boundaries of Kruger when there are so many side roads to see. I didn't have a map, but thought I could remember an alternative route to Satara from the South. As I passed the Tshokwane tea room I took a dirt road left. It would either lead me to Orpen Gate or take me up to the centre of the park. Either ...

... He considered. He moved forward. We backed up. You could just about see him thinking, "Boy, this is fun. I wonder how long they'll play". We will miss the World Elephant Polo Championships in Nepal. When the sport was first introduced it was played with soccer balls until the elephants discovered they could explode them by standing on them. Scotland are the current world champions. Elephants do have a sense of humour. ** How weird is that? Spend all day ...

Driving to the Kruger

... to the Kruger)at about 3-4pm. HOWEVER, the bridge was closed due to flooding!!! So we found an accommodation centre on our side of the river. The manageress said it would take 2 hours to get to our camp-site INSIDE the park as we would have to back-track to another entrance gate. Venessa sorted out our booking at the camp-site to start a day later and we took up the offer of some budget accommodation in dorms as no-one else was staying there ...
