Coasting the Catlins

Day 1 - Saturday 29 May Our first stop heading down the Catlins (one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand) was Brighton Beach where we enjoyed an ice cream even though it was freezing cold. We quickly hopped back in the car and headed off southwards to Nugget Point. Stopping on the way to take some pictures Claire slipped on a rock and badly bashed her knee - oops! Anyway we got out to Nugget Point, walked out to the point and then enjoyed some lovely cheese and fresh crusty bread for lun...

Our attempt at a nature trail!!!

Southern Coastal Trail We decided to follow the southern costal trail south of Dunedin around the bottom of the south island. There are meant to be alot of wildlife around this area including seal lions, seals, yellow eyed penguins and blue penguins but unfortunately our timing really stank at being in the right place at the right time so we did not see much sea life (I think you have to be up really early or be around in eveing). WE did meet a guy who swam with dolphins (mini Hector kind) an...

A little taste of Scotland

... was fabulous. They have a great natural history area which includes an exhibit relating to Charles Darwin, in honor of his 200th birthday. There are also exhibits about early settlers including the Maori ancestors, and a very interesting maritime section which included lots of models of old ships. Then we visited the Otago University -- beautiful Scottish architecture. We rode a bus home.

... to help him out for four hours this afternoon. He's paying $20 an hour and your friend Martin is keen. Do you want to do it?” the lack of details intrigued me. I asked Martin if he had any more details and he told me that he didn't but he was doing it regardless. I did try and scare him by suggesting it could be nude modelling or milking cows but he didn't really care. The Polish work ethic is truly something to behold. I, on the other hand, hadn't done any ...

... 8217;s paradise – The Cadburys factory! Unfortunately they were fixing the roof when we visited so we weren’t able to do the full tour but we still got to see lots of things including seeing a tonne of molten dairy milk chocolate falling in the chocolate waterfall. At the end of our tour the guide asked everyone to hold up their hands. We all wondered what she was doing and as she inspected us, Keith was the only ...

Disappointing Dunedin but awesome Otago

... from Sheffield and had a very entertaining evening ending in several glasses of port and a late night. The next day the sun came out and we looked around the impressive gardens and the castle, small but interesting, before driving up the peninsula to join a boat tour - only 12 of us. Brilliant skipper who was the nature guide as well. On the way out we came across 3 pods of Dusky Dolphins, a trio of Sea Lions and several Fur ...

The South East and Otago Penninsula

... we simply took a walk along the cliff edge and got blown around due to the very strong gusts. Feeling cold and battered we returned to Dunedin and found the steepest street in the world, Baldwin Street. The ****** rental car had a hard time reaching the top (or was that Chris being unrelentful) but the view down was impressive. Unfortunately the pitures we got do not give it justice so trust us - it was very steep! Back into town for a wander ...
