I may have overestimated the ease of solo backpacking.
To say the least, last night after arriving in Delhi had been a very frightening experience. I consider myself a pretty non-gullable person who is skeptical of everyone in a new town, but I nearly got scammed that night.
I arriving in Delhi at 1am in the morning. I had a …
Jet-lagged in the craziness of Pahar Ganj
The flight from New York to Delhi, was, well, long. Basically, it was an exercise in shoveling curry into our faces every three hours while continually shifting body weight from right cheek to left on hard metal seats covered with a thin cloth veneer. Fortunately, the beer flowed for free, so, moments of oblivion provided a nice calming effect. Dad …
Homeward bound!!!
Namaste!
It was a very comfortable ride in a very modern air conditioned bus to the airport and then after a three hour flight we were in Delhi. For 300 INR per night is this guesthouse, okay. It is clean and you have your own bathroom, the people are very friendly, you have Internet and a luggage storage

We checked out a few rooms at the Hare Rama before settling on a second-floor room with lights that actually worked (RM 109). The beds had a generous 2 inches of foam sitting atop a sheet of plywood, which managed to rub my elbow raw as I jockeyied for position all night long. My pillow smell like a combination of armpits and garam masala, so, I fashioned a quick pillow case out of my dirty sweatshirt. The metal piping beneath the sink was substantial enough to lock my bag to it, but the sink was a little drippy and moistened the top of my bag with a bit of stagnant brown water.
The guys at the front desk were friendly, and happily set us up with a wake-up call, which, was in fact delivered. Room was a decent rate: 350 rupees/ night, no A/C
Keep in mind, staying in Pahar Ganj is meant to be a gritty experience. Honky horns, barking dogs, domestic disputes, and random music provide the expected ambiance. Hare Rama is as good as any other place I've stayed at in P.G.
