Rainy days in Durban

... in Durban is limited. Despite almost constant rain, I've enjoyed walking around the city a bit and visiting several small museums.

Tomorrow I'm heading up into the northern Drakensberg mountains, where I hope the weather will be good enough to hike and ride horseback over the next couple of days.

Sequestered in a Durban Hotel

I carted my bags down to curbside at 2:15 AM and went off in search of a taxi to take me to the Emirates Airline office where I'd pick up the shuttle bus to Dubai Airport. I found one handily but then almost forgot my Blackberry on the back seat. Thankfully the taxi driver saw me whoopin' and hollering and stopped so I could retrieve it. Close shave!

The ride to Dubai was uneventful - no rank aromas or samerai ...

Pleasant Day in Durban

... elevate her elephant as she went round and round. She had a big smile on her face, and the R7 (85c) ticket was a great bargain. We then went on the cableway for R9 ($1.10) and enjoyed views over the pools to the beach and up the Florida-like line of hotels. It was a very nice ride, and Monica joined us for that while Suzan and Jeff walked down to Joe Cool’s Restaurant.

At Joe Cool’s a crowd had gathered to watch the rugby match ...

... days in Durban and we enjoyed our time here. We went to Sea World at U Shaka ~ no, that is not a typo, there is a Sea World with dolphin and seal shows. It was about 5euro to get in and was well worth it in my opinion. You can dive in the aquariums here for relatively cheap, but we didn't bother. Also you can be picked to interact with dolphins as part of the show for free ~ the staff will ask for volunteers to help them early on in the show, DON'T make a ...

... reading about plans for it as a schoolboy - now there are some condo's and theme parks taking root. They started at the harbour mouth a while back, but that all got knocked down in order to widen the mouth. They also built a phallic light house pretty quickly too. I wandered into the estate agent's in the development to pose as a foreign investor. It looked like here too we would have some delays. There was a serious one when they handed all the land over to the ...

Never have I been so excited by a grocery store

South Africa is really... white. Durban is dangerous at night and there
is a huge mall. They have blackouts every day for two hours at two in
the afternoon, and even the malls shut down.

... and picked up a rental car at the airport. We drove from the airport to Addo, South Africa, and checked into the Homestead B&B for the night. We then drove to Addo Elephant National Park and spent the afternoon driving around the park in our own car. In the past, elephants lived throughout the Cape Colony, but as the land was settled they were hunted to extinction. Only 15 ...

... while and then had to say goodnight and goodbye, it was an emotional goodbye and Meegan and I were very sad to see our group leave without us. The group was just starting to get on our goodsides and we actually began to think we might learn to like these people given enough time, although we weren't terribly upset to say goodbye to them, we were to say goodbye to the crew. Meegan had similar plans as me, I booked a ...

... that just does not shut up. Apparently they also have monkeys. And a lovely bird called a "Lourie" which has a purple crest and a red head (or maybe the other way round). Went out to a lovely place for tea/coffee and a muffin or piece of pie in a lovely mall with roses in it. For dinner we joined another friend of my cousin's at Aubergine & Andreotti ...
