Great Rift Valley Lodge Nairobi

I had a wonderful day today, in Kibera, the largest slum in Africa. This is the part of town, the Juakali Drummers are from, and one of my colleagues was also born and brought up here. He was going to visit friends and family - so I asked to tag along and take a look.

We drove through the mud tracks, filled with trash and loads of bumps and potholes. He tells me that he used to sit by the edge of these roads and wait for cars ...

... two things in particular though: a) working with parents - the gratitude and appreciation that parents express after parent workshops or after I give them advice following on from assessing their child makes me feel very humble; b) teaching the student teachers at KISE, they are usually very thirsty for information and keen to learn about children with communication disabilities, considering there are only 6 Kenyan speech and language therapists here ...

We would need a police escort over the next 30km as there is a chance of bandits over this section, we arrived at 3.30pm and were told to wait an hour for the escort to arrive. safari (yeah right couldn't wait to get there!) and so on saturday I
was whisked off to the beautiful Masaii Mara National Park.....the
pictures tell the story the best but we saw rhinos, zebras, buffalo,
elephants, wilderbeast, deer, hippos, crocs, giraffes, warthogs
etc....complete with the backdrop of the rolling hills of the african
savannah....it was beautiful! I hooked up with 2 lovelies from
Switzerland and we ...

It felt like quite an acheivement and unique, for me, to conclude (almost) this summer in which I feel I have learnt a lot about the value of working step by step to realise our goals and setting this in the context of a very tanglible journey where Sammy's catchphrase was "poli, poli" (slowly, slowly) to get us to the top.
