Slumdog Millionaire!

I had a wonderful day today, in Kibera, the largest slum in Africa. This is the part of town, the Juakali Drummers are from, and one of my colleagues was also born and brought up here. He was going to visit friends and family - so I asked to tag along and take a look.

We drove through the mud tracks, filled with trash and loads of bumps and potholes. He tells me that he used to sit by the edge of these roads and wait for cars ...

Reflections one year in - a year of contradictions

... two things in particular though: a) working with parents - the gratitude and appreciation that parents express after parent workshops or after I give them advice following on from assessing their child makes me feel very humble; b) teaching the student teachers at KISE, they are usually very thirsty for information and keen to learn about children with communication disabilities, considering there are only 6 Kenyan speech and language therapists here ...

Kenya - Leg 3

... stopping at a small village called Serolevi. We would need a police escort over the next 30km as there is a chance of bandits over this section, we arrived at 3.30pm and were told to wait an hour for the escort to arrive. They left just after we had arrived without telling us, so we ended up camping in the local police station.

Dist cov. = 192 km

24th - Joined a convoy of 8 trucks for the 30km and we were pushed to the front. There ...

... 8217;s special day!) and we cracked open and downed those bubbles out of the two mini glass champagne flutes I picked up at Blokker. We headed to the privium lounge…where a few "a la Ashling" mishaps occurred: failing to land ass on suspended seat whilst trying to pick up Choufleur’s second call and landing squarely on her @ss fore the confused gazes of the well-to-do of the lounge. Which was quickly followed by Alizeti’s lovely glass filled to the ...

Into Africa

... set of huts which we shared with Colobus Monkeys and, at night, a disconcerting number of buffalo.
It felt like quite an acheivement and unique, for me, to conclude (almost) this summer in which I feel I have learnt a lot about the value of working step by step to realise our goals and setting this in the context of a very tanglible journey where Sammy's catchphrase was "poli, poli" (slowly, slowly) to get us to the top.

The following week was a ...

Beads for my sponsor

... dust riddled almost every visable area of clothing on my body!)
Juliet's hair was shaved short leaving all of the focus on her sparkling eyes and her incredibly beautiful smile.

We shared stories of inspiration taking in every detail of Juliet's message to her sponsors. She thanked them for making it possible for her to go to school and revealed that girls who don't get such an opportunity in life are ...

Day 1-3 : Nairobi

... but on TV and to see it in real life was totally different. I didn’t end up seeing any lions, which I had hoped for but heard them roaring from about 1- 2 km’s away. It was still an amazing sensation none the less. I did see many ostriches, giraffes, zebras, elands, waterbucks, cape buffalo and the one rhino. Although I did go there to see the animals it was the spectacular views of the savannah with the city of Nairobi in the background that truly ...

Unexpected Blessings

... simple church where his wife was attending service. A dozen children played in the yard and they ran up excitedly to the car when they saw us inside. We heard the familiar cry of “Mzungu.“ Patrick parked the car and exited. I then realized that we were going into the service. Jackie and I glanced nervously at each other knowing that our entrance was not going to go unnoticed. Many parishioners stopped and stared as we quickly slipped into a pew. After a ...
