... Our count for wildlife today just went up: 1 mouse, 2 chipmunks, 4 squirrels, 3 mountain goats, and a big pigeon-looking bird that BKL thinks was a ptarmigan.

The sky is much hazier this afternoon. Not a good sign of what tomorrow will bring.

We stopped at McDonald Lake at 7:30 for sunset pictures. Still a little too early but the sun has bright yellow halos around it that are casting great deep goldish-yellow shimmers on the water. Fantastic!

        Recovery Day

A travel blog entry by ctpage on Aug 17, 2015

Not much to report today as we were mainly recovering from our monster hike yesterday. We took a picnic lunch and sat on the shore of Lake McDonald, enjoying the vista and some peace and quiet. After lunch we went to Apgar Village where we had arranged to meet ...

95 degrees to 45 degrees in a matter of hours. Awoke to clouds, wind and rain. "You get what you get, so deal with it", We're going! It will be an interesting day on the mountain, what with the low clouds, and the radar shows some clearing possible.  We decided to go up the Pass and check out Hidden Lake. Maybe the clouds will part come midday, maybe not, but it should be interesting. The weather is constantly ...

... was stopped. Our guide called this "prairie dog sightseeing." It was a great way to see this famous but precarious road. Sheer drop offs make this road not for the faint of heart.

The Going to the Sun road runs for 53 miles the entire width of the park, crossing the Continental Divide at Logan pass. The road is considered an engineering marvel even today, especially given what tools and technology were available when it was built in the 1920s ...

... a piano, and we found one of the guests, a little girl of maybe 7 or 8, playing on it this morning. A staff of 3 or 4 people is normally busy in the kitchen cooking up scrambled eggs, bacon, ham, pancakes and waffles. Olivia and I both go for the bacon and waffles first; we top the waffles with homemade huckleberry jam, and you won't hear anything else from us after that but humming and awing.

We knew we wanted to do a fairly good ...
