Back from the bush!

Hey everybody, we're back from our 2-day stint out on the Queen Charlotte Track. On our way from Kaikoura to Picton on Monday we detaoured via Havelock for a greenlip mussel lunch - Havelock prides itself on being 'the greenshell capital of the world' and they didn't diappoint either. We then took a scenic drive to Picton giving fabulous views of the Marlborough Sounds, in glorious sunshine. We couldn't resist a mini-golf rematch, a much better 'course' with Siwan taking the honours this time...

Christchurch

This is now Valentine's Day and we are on the TranzAlpine train from Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island east coast through Arthur's Pass to Greymouth on the west coast and then return. Advertised as one of the great train journeys of the world and despite the rain on parts of the journey, it is spectacular. We had a great ferry ride to Picton and the scenery was beautiful arriving into Picton to see the picturesque harbour in the late afternoon sun. We stayed at the Yacht Club hotel a...

The Marlborough Region

Got to Picton at around 6 pm, picked up our new car and drove to our little cabin in the local Holiday Park after a bit of food shopping. The following morning we took a boat into the Queen Charlotte Sound and were dropped at Ship Cove, from where we started walking towards Furneaux Lodge. It was a beautiful day, with a bit of high cloud, which gave the sea a steely-blue colour. Unfortunately, most of the walk was in the shade of the rainforest. I'm not complaining: it was beautiful rainfores...

Tues 27 Jan - Malborough Sounds Day 2 (Endeavour Bay to Punga Cove) Up at 8am to have bag outside door ready for collection for boat and next destination. Had a tea and wandered around the Lodge with the sun starting to come over the mountain - well it would be doing if the clouds weren't in the way. Left around 9am and took a walk up to a waterfall behind the lodge. Again starting up hill! Don't know how long the roots of the trees are going to survive with people treading on them all the ti...

Day 1

I woke up nice and early, and took advantage of the free breakfast that was on offer at The Villa. The cereals and toast set me up for the day, which was important since I only had 4 Moro bars to last until I reached the first hostel. At 8.20am I walked down to The Cougar Line's office and checked in with them, and left my main backpack in their (hopefully) responsible hands. A quick coffee in a local cafe followed, and then it was time to hop on the boat, or 'water taxi' as it is also known....

Days 50-55 - Farewell to NZ

... blue lake with a backdrop of mountains. The true brilliance of the blue colour is due to the rock content of the water. Similarly, Lake Pukaki was formed as a result of the retreating glacier gouging out the ground thousands of years ago. This also left tiny silt-like particles which are suspended the water and give it a milkiness which then refracts the sunlight to give a vivid blue colour as you can see in the photo. On ...

Ending the Crusade.

... of old. Many ardent supporters where mumbling beside us, particularly as the Hurricanes won! We left Christchurch, and so too New Zealand, at a very ungodly hour! New Zealand has been an incredible experience (incredibly expensive too!). We both thought a month would be ample time, but now realise we have only scratched the surface. What we have seen has been extraordinarily beautiful though the weather ended up less than ideal. In the perfect world, New ...

... scale road works. We visited the tea rooms which included; me being thrown by a build your own breakfast menu, a ice cream each and a conversation that included the owner suggesting I become a ski bunny (as with many jobs I don't think I have the correct experience or clothes). We then had a afternoon snooze under a bridge, not because the man at 'National park' had recommended it but because it was shady and the river ,as most rivers are in this area, was almost dry. We ...
