DAY 16 Well it rained all night and this morning is hazy but we're on our way to Dunedin. On the advice of some people who we met at breakfast on the farm we've stopped off at a beach which is meant to be the only place where you can find sea lions, sea elephants and seals altogether. I got scared and have come back to sit in the car and wait for Stan. How big is a sea lion? Bloody ginormous!!! What really scared me was I had expected to see them sitting on the sand where they could be easily...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand maxnstan... time, couldn't even manage to open the fuel tank thing, there was a helpful man that worked there that helped! Cost $80 for half tank, not too bad! The journey to Te Aun was again really nice and quite simple, the roads are completeyl empty and you go through towns which seem derelict, like something out of an American horror film!!! But they are actually really nice. The whole of NZ feels like its years behind the rest of the world!
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand nicowala... ripped out trees.' Now, I had my fair share of fun and games at university to be sure but pulling up trees? Are there no traffic cones in Dunedin? I'd be hard pushed to gather the energy together after a days drinking to go yanking up woody plant's. On a Friday night a student should drink cheap booze, go to a rubbish club, swear never to do it again and then proceed to repeat this behaviour for three years. Come on New Zealand, catch up!

... returning from their day at sea to their chicks. This site closes at 4:45pm in Winter, again there are also 100's of seals. It gets dark here early in winter so the drive back in the dark. We had diner at the Scotia Restaurant and Whiskey Bar at the old Railway Station (a site in it's own right).
On Friday we went to an old house call Olverston, a tour of the Cadbury Chocolate Factory and the a Tour of the Speights Brewery.
On Saturday i
... lunch at the YHA before getting on the next bus to Christchurch, one of the hostel staff comes up to us with a serious face, "I am the bearer of bad bews". Joel's mind immediately jumps to the backpacks which we left in reception while out for the morning, "the backpacks have been nicked'. 'No, but when I was in your room after you checked out I found bedbugs". I had actually been itching around the ankles but had ignored it as so far we have ...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand joelrose... done with the boulders, we had lunch at a local beach restaurant and resumed our driving towards Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula. We made a few more stops on the way, the most notorious being the one at Shag Point. We knew nothing about the place, but were drawn to it by its ambiguous name, and were surprised to find a fairly large fur seal colony, this was our first seal sighting in New Zealand, and this was a breeding colony as there were many pups around. Besides the ...
Portobello, South Island, New Zealand aguasDunedin... otherwise known as little Edinburgh. almost and pretty, not quite as rich in history, but just as fun! eunice and i arrived early one afternoon to a cold and almost frigid Dunedin... it was on and off rain and the only thing that kept us there was the promise of sunshine to come the next day... and it did come ... still cold, but the sun was a nice warming change... side note: did you know that NZ has one of the biggest holes in ...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand euniceandbyoung... kilometers of the journey was on the (tongue definitely in cheek) Gore-Clinton Presidential Highway! At a coffee stop in Clinton we got chatting (as we seem to do all the time in NZ) to a nice lady who was from Manchester and spends 6 months living in Dunedin close to her son who is an A&E doctor there and the other 6 months in Manchester close to her other son. She only has summers! Also drove through Milton whose ...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand mertonkiwis... times and bad-prohibition in NZ back in the day and brought us to each stage of the brewing process. Afterwards were were brought to the sampling bar where we all pulled our own ale samples. Speights Gold Medal Ale is the main drink in NZ - it's not bad marks out of ten it gets a 7 on my scale. Went for dinner in the Brewery restaurant after and returned to the campsite for the night. Next morning we went for a tour of ...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand sarahanddermot... you have ever seen! It actually meant that the rib-eye on the plate was nearly forgotton - oh no! We woke Monday morning to a spectacular view out to the mountains from our window and yet again a crisp but sunny feel. The road east back to the coast took us through valleys and next to the river running out to the sea, although as the snow had melted and so the landscape was completely different to the day before. Despite the wind picking up ...
