At the end of the world (well, almost...)

... Ushuaia beneath you, the mountains around and not much land in front. The wind was such that i had to climb and descend on all fours, but the solitude, view and challenge that provided was well worth it. Ignoring a few little islands ahead, i was alone on a mountain with nothing but a few hundred miles between me and Antarctica.

I was on the verge of heading into the national park for a few days amping and ...

Glaciar Martial e muita neve

Day 28: May 24

... and the exercise. I run back to the lodge in time for the van pickup. What a great place!!!

Heading back to the hotel, we go out to eat at an all you can eat place. The food is ok, but Buenos Aires was great. We try to meet up with a friend that I had met the night before at any internet cafe. He is from NY and traveling for the past 1 year and a half. He drove down via central america and plans to return to Buenos Aires before flying back to the states. He is German and ...

Fin Del Mundo

... Yamau. Fascinating as we got to understand how the Estancia was set-up and attracted Yamau in need of new technologies to produce food, as their seal supplies ran scarce. Popping into some museums about the island and a historic museum showing the origins of the Yamau (and other settlers) as far back as when the continents were joined were the other highlights; before we made our way back up north towards El Calafate - an attempt to beat the ...

The End of the World...

... bus driver told us we had to walk 3 hours to the place where we would be picked up. It was actually a lovely walk although the scenery didnīt quite meet Torres Del Paine standards but Iīm glad I got to see it and we actually all enjoyed the walk although half of it was spent with me and Anna giggling hysterically for no apparent reason, which I think may have been a side effect of the green beer... The next day we discovered that the flight we had booked out of ...

Day 2. Buenos Aires to Ushuaia

... was founded in 1884 and means "Bay Facing West". It is capital of the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego and the southernmost city in the world. Here we were 625 miles away of the Antarctic peninsula and 1900 miles south of Buenos Aires We visited the old Prison, built in the early part of the 20 Century and closed in 1947. Part of it is retained as a museum and there were some interesting displays in the old cells ...

First Day in Ushuaia

... reboarded the plane and continued onto Ushuaia. Arrived in Ushuaia and the temp is OK around 11 was met by veronica from the tour company, she spoke English well and had all of the answers to my questions as if she had been asked them before. She took me to the hostel a cute little place just of the main street. They have wireless internet so I have logged on just to do this update for those unfortunate to be stuck back in the land of OZ. See ya.

its the end of the world as we know it

... anyways, to keep warm, these natives had fires burning constantly. this is the sight the white man saw when they first arrived, calling this area the land of fires or Tierra del Fuego. now thereīs the history lesson for the day. one other cool thing about ushuaia is that its an interesting mix of old, young, wealthy and budget... people of all sorts arrive to see what the end of the world is like and to experience the land of fires...

CHAPTER 2: YOU SAY PAMPAS, I SAY NAPPIES

... out our fueling woes and we merrily rumble along the highway again. Only pressurise tanks when running on empty is the lesson learned. 300 kilometres is all we can muster today, due to the late start, mechanical discoveries and bodies that are not in tune to long distance travel like this. An unremarkable day of driving with gas found and cheap lodging secured. It's not much, but it's a start. Wednesday Jan 14th START: 1503 km FROM: Azul TO: Viedma FINISH: 2176 km Apologies ...
