Skukuza Restcamp Kruger

Skukuza Restcamp, Kruger, 19th September 2009

We were up at 5am and ready for the gate to open which it did just before 6am. We decided to take the secondary road to Skukuza rather than the tar road. The weather was still cloudy and cool, but once we got to Orpen Dam the weather had changed and it was sunny and very warm again. It was very pleasant drive and we didn't see much traffic on these roads. At Skukuza we ...

Day 131 - SA, Skukuza - Kruger NP

... despite the clouds getting darker and closer by the second. Pulled into camp with the first drops falling. By the time we had the tarp over it was pouring. Lucky we had come back after all. With the tent water tight we went for another drive. More giraffe, zebras, impala, springbok... no lions though. Returned to camp at 6 and had beer overlooking the river. Checked out how much they were selling zebra skins for in the gift shop as ...

the poncho did not cut the mustard

... got back to the lodge. i used the poncho to protect my bag and my legs and let's just say that it was completely drenched in about 2 minutes time. the rain was coming down in buckets and when we crossed a river, we could see heavier rain approaching. everyone in the car was laughing like crazy for the whole ride back to the lodge. i don't know how long it took but it was a wild and wet ride. when i got out of the vehicle, it looked like my ...

Lions in Trees

... feeling like it couldn't get better. it did. last night we had a rare sighting and were able to witness it all by ourselves (meaning, our land rover was the only one there). our ranger heard that a female leopard had killed 2 baby impalas and took them up a tree with her. on our way to see her, we passed a pride of lions (mostly females and one male) about 100 meters away from the leopard in the tree. our ranger had enough foresight to predict what ...

Day 3 - Safari!

... some animals, and the day got better from then on. Before I started to feel better everyone had agreed that I should see the doctor back at the campsite, we thought it might be best to still see him so we headed back. I felt a bit bad because I was dragging everyone else back, but everyone agreed that we should go back. By the time we got back it was 2pm and the doctors was closed anyway. I bought ...

Lions, Zebras, & Impalas...... Oh My!

... 6:30am took most of the dirty clothes from our bag, shoved new clothes in, and Daan was at the house by 7am and we were back on our way out to Lizelle's house in Worcester for breakfast. Then we headed south, out to the coast, to Franskra and Gaanisbia for New Years. We were staying at our friend Geilie's parent's house with Lizelle, Daan, Cecile, Gillie, Sarah, and I. The only thing we did for the rest of the day was lay on the beach, swim, and play beach bats (beach tennis....I ...

Frankolin retreat in Satara

... more confident, they learnt to accept the oats from an outstretched palm. I watched one day in June as the babies focused on a hand containing oats so much that they stepped on to Robs other hand without noticing. It was only as they were slowly lifted higher that they realized and jumped off. But still, nothing deterred them from their free feed. Now, whenever I go close to them as they ...

All comes to those who wait

... used to go every single year, and I heard stories of fresh breads and pastas being cooked under the starry skies of the barren landscape. When I saw that the club still had spaces left for their booking in May 06, I thought we should definitely give it a go. Bruce was a little less enthusiastic as he wasn't to keen on "endurance" hiking. I thought the challenge to our bodies would be a good thing, push the boundaries ... that kind of thing. Plus it'll both our first visit ...

Driving to the Kruger

... called Witbank and we saw quite a few signs saying 'HIJACKING HOTSPOT'!!!!!!!!. We had no problems though... Just before we got to Crocodile Bridge we had to drive through a small African town near the Mozambique border that had loads of Army dudes with machine guns. It was our first taste of a true African town. We knew it was slightly dodgey as Venessa locked all the doors and wound up the windows. We arrived at Crocodile Bridge Gate ...
