Elephant safari

We booked a safari in Botswana via our hosts in Livingstone - Jolly Boys Backpackers and opted for a 2 day and one night safari for $280 each, this included 2 river safaris, and a 4X4 land safari. After crossing the border into Botswana we were picked up by our host Elephant Valley Lodge and taken to a boat for the river safari. As we cruised up the River Chobe we saw up close the many hippos and crocodiles, and watched as the fish eagles glided down for their prey. I have to admit sitting on...

From Victoria Falls, we had a private transfer to Botswana, where we were met by one of the rangers at the Elephant Valley Lodge. The rain started and the rain never stopped from the moment we crossed the boarder. It was the wet season, so rain was expected, but they were having record book rainfall, just our luck :) Because of all the rain and the plentiful supply of water, the animals were scattered all over the park. The watering hole at our lodge was covered in grass. One of the guests, w...

The first safari camp we stayed in was Elephant Valley Lodge, in tents in the middle of wildlife! The camp had its own waterhole where many different animals came to drink and often stayed for some time so we could enjoy watching. It was so fantastic that it was almost surreal; looking at these magnificent creatures that we previously only had seen on TV. Then we went on real safaris, with wonderful guides that could tell about everything we saw, from the tiniest insect to the majestic elepha...

In the afternoon we did a regular safari in jeeps before reaching our bush camp. We saw a lot of beautiful birds (great for Troy, the ecologist on our trip who specializes in birds) and great for us (because Troy was ...

Our scariest animal encounter, day 5 in the wild

... time.

In our final evening game drive we had our scariest animal experience of the entire trip. The story went something like this.....

We were sitting on top of the car at sunset having a G&T as usual, enjoying the zebras grazing in front of us. Then Chris spotted a nearby tree where about 20 vultures had gathered, and more were flying in by the minute. Large amounts of vultures can only mean one ...

Botswana's Story

... of days (and save money for things I haven't done before)...it was a strange experience to be around the truck without its dozens of usual inhabitants.

The vibe on the truck has improved ten-fold with the change of people and attitude...everyone is determined to remain positive and excited about the next 4-5 months ahead, which makes the trip so much more enjoyable and fun! We had a ...

Chobe!

The kids were pretty roudy this morning, but I guess that is to be expected sometimes from first graders. One little girl, Unice (there are two - one tall, one shorter), is finishing all her work very quickly (and correctly), so I have started giving her extra work. She is very smart. I asked her after school today if she can read. I think she can. No one here has books - no adults, no children ...

Cheeky Dog in Botswana

... asleep. I opened the tent to get in and sat down. I spun around to take my flop-flips off. Took them off and spun around to close the tent. After a few seconds Nat turned around sleepily and said "Leon there is something in the tent. I said "Its ok babes its just me. "No leon there is something on my legs. "Your dreaming babes" "NO Leon there is a dog on my legs ...

... dazed for a bit and managed to fly off at high speed after a couple of minutes. We crossed the border into Botswana and they had strict Foot and mouth controls there so every so often the truck got pulled in and we had to take 2 pairs of shoes and walk onto a mat that ahd been sprayed while the truck went though a ford of the same stuff. Stopped at a small town to get some food etc and i had to change some US dollars into Botswana Pulla so i could buy ...

Where are the Elephants in Botswana?
