Elephants!

We just got back from spending two days with the elephants at this eco-lodge outside of Luang Prabang. The elephants are all rescued from logging or other manual labor jobs and brought to the preserve. They give tourists rides to offset their upkeep costs. We spent two days and one night at the lodge, living like a mahout (the people who care for the elephants). Each elephant has one mahout who cares for them for years. The first day we rode the elephants in the morning for an hour. Chris rod...

The Road to the End...

... stepping on my back. It actually felt really nice and I think I may prefer these types of massages to the traditional Swedish oil massage which mostly involves rubbing and kneading. Just before I had to catch the bus, I climbed up to the top of a local temple to watch the sunset. I grabbed a sixty cent fruit smoothie and some fresh spring rolls and made my way back to the hotel where I was picked up in a tuk tuk and taken to the bus station for my bus to the capital, Vientiane, where my ...

This place, though not big, is an important place as it had the fomer Palace now a museum. the flight was an hour and we came into a very small airport - ours was the only plane there. I stayed by the Mekong River. There are the usual markets the main street becomes a long market at night and the whole place has a very calm feel to it.

Every morning at 530 at the top of the street the monks had a ceremony to collect alms ...

... filling rice and noodle with all kinds of veggie on top that cost half a dollar. I quickly set a pattern for my daily life here: in the morning, after breakfast, I would do some sightseeing, finished by noon when it got hot, followed by a quick lunch and then blog writing in my cool room, out again at dusk for the sunset over the Mekong and dinner, after that an hour or so in the internet café.

I also rented a bike to take myself inside ...

What a lot of Wats

... out on to the streets to give alms to the hundreds of Buddhists monks who live there. Locals lay mats on the floor and kneel down with huge containers of sticky rice and each morning the monks form a procession and walk in single file around the town taking a small amount of food in a covered bowl from each town’s person. It is quite a sight to see a line of brightly clad, orange robed monks snake down through the wonderful streets of such ...

Yeah...I don't know.
Oh oh oh, the other night Ou asked me to eat with him and his family for dinner. I was completely flattered that he asked me to and I was just as nervous as I was flattered. At the point when Jerry Springer was telling everyone about some escaped piglets jumping off a bus roof and their subsequent internal injuries in northern Laos (which an Australian found so hilarious that Beerlao soda-streamed from his nostrils and he almost choked) we decided to call it a night ...
