... We are then stationary for about 2 hours. We´re not told anything, and nobody asks any questions. My friend Gloria comments that if this was in the US, everyone would be up in arms, demanding to know what was happening. Our Peruvian travellers just quietly accept it ,and manage to sleep on through. They´re made of tougher stuff than we are I tell G.
In contrast to the nightmarish night, the last 5 hours of the journey are amazing. We´ve crossed the mountains and ...
... plate which Sam insisted on having his picture taken with, then two guys went back for seconds for our buffet dinner and gleefully told us tarantula number 2 had been on the post by the dessert and “boy it moved quick to catch a passing insect” - my mosquito net got tucked in extra tight that night.
In summery ……the jungle has big ants (that bite), squirrels, Stinky Birds, huge spiders mud and makes you sweat a lot ……… ...

Ants, spiders, tarantulas, termites, flora and fauna we saw in shedloads but panthers, jaguars, anteaters and all the other large beats were nowhere to be seen.
Debbie did contrive to step on another snake. Mammal and reptile alike both jumped out of their skin both shouting naughty words whilst ...
... panther kitten, who looks just like a sleek, elegant black cat (like Merlin after a hefty diet maybe?). There is also a jungle canopy walk which showed us the view from above the treetops, amongst hovering blue butterflies.
We have also been amazed at how many delicious foods and even drinks can be made from plantain banana and yucca. Though I think I've now had enough yucca (like a very dry textured potato) for a little while.
... t look to appealing to swim in. Especially knowing there are alligators and piranhas in there. The boats here have the funniest engines. It looks like a lawn mower but it’s louder with a long stick attached to it and an itsy bitsy fan motor at the end.
We rode along the current of the river so it only took us an hour to reach the lodge. The lodge was great with bungalows and lots of hammocks!

... airport. It was a long walk, but I didn´t mind it much. I had the op to speak to some locals on the way, who all thought I was crazy for walking. It´s funny, this is a re-occuring theme in my travels, locals thinking I´m crazy for a desire to walk long distances, or carry a heavy pack, or anything that is apart from being carried on a canopy atop of some natives shoulders to get to my destination. It seems that a lot of locals have this ...
Puerto Maldonado, Peru glennrdohertyFor two weeks, in Puerto Maldonado, I struggled to find a purpose and meaning for my being there. I had no luck getting out into the Amazon. It all seemed superficial, anything I could do with the resources I had was going to be nothing more than a stroll through the jungle- a simple day hike on the outskirts of the city (destination by boat), where little to no wild-life exists and is a poor representation of what the Amazon Jungle truly is. I chose not to settle for ...
Puerto Maldonado, Peru glennrdoherty... another flight to come in? We were told nothing. But we did get to leave the office and go to the boat. About 20 of us boarded a boat and headed to Explorer's Inn.
Two and half hours later, we arrive. The Inn looks like camp for adults. There is a group of people playing soccer in a field which all the rooms face. Later, we learn the people are biologists studying the amazon. There is no electricity and no hot water. It doesn't really matter ...
... room. I'm literally cut off from
communication with only pure wilderness around.
The next day, we
awake at 4:30 in the morning and board the boat for a drive up the
river to see the Mccaw clay lick. It is so dark and the river ride is
very rough, it also starts to rain and I get scared not knowing how our
captain can navigate this curving river in the dark with so many tree
trunks and debris floating around. One wrong move ...
