Training in Kathmandu & Dhulikel, trekking from Pokhora in the Annapurnas, tracking rhino on an elephant in the Royal Chitwan Park & teaching in Pokhora. I have been wanting to come to Nepal for about the last 8 yrs, having seen lots of pictures from mountaineering expeditions & from friends who have been here. The kids always look adorable too, so why not use that English Language Teaching qualification I worked so hard for last year & do voluntary work here too. I guess I ha...

Elephants and Rhinos

The highlight of our tour would definitely have to be the time we spent in Chitwan National Park in southern Nepal. After a crazy time getting here we ended up on Friday at our wonderful resort where we were treated like VIP guests. Our guides were so nice and took us all around the park and showed us many of the endangered animals of the region. The park was amazing and a great place to spend my 30th birthday. On Tuesday we did our big hike which really pushed many of us to our physical limi...

Paragliding and elephants

As promised the rest of my story!

I went to Pokhara just for one day for one hour of paragliding. It was nice to be back in a place where I didn't need to find out where the cheapiest and best food is and where a good hotel is or what to have to pay for the bus to get me to the right place. I booked the paragliding for the following morning and just relaxed the rest of the day. Oh yeah we had an accident on the way. Our experienced driver, the ...

Video of the rhino we spotted in the mist crossing the river on the second morning, just as the park opened. This smart little devil was actually outside the park when we spotted him, helping himself to local crops:

A Jungle Getaway

... saw no animals. After that we went back to the river and took a bath with the elephants. I was the first one to rip off my clothes and raise my arms upwards at the man on the elephant so he could let me on. Laura and Carolina get on with me and the elephant then splashes you with water from his trunk. he does that a few times, which is hilarious and then shakes wildly to throw you into the river. ... blades. When speaking to a local guide, he asked if we had seen any bears or crocodiles, Amy nearly passed out. We did get to see a really big animal that night when a mouse flashed across the bedroom floor just before lights out. Again, Amy nearly passed out. The little bugger slipped under the door and we didn't see him again.

Sauraha was a good place to relax so we stayed an extra night before moving on.

Chitwan National Park

We arrived in Chitwan at lunchtime and went with a tout and found an okay place to stay but it was right on the river and only 300 rupees which is just over two pound so we were happy. We are staying just outside the National Park in a town called Sauraha which is on the Rapti river bank, it is a small town with hundreds of places to stay and few shops and restaurants. We had a lovely walk down the river and watched the sunset over the ...

The Elephant Man

... arrived on the same day and booked a few things to do over the next few days. On the first day we took a ~45-minute canoe ride down the river (the river is the border with the park) and then jumped out with two guides for a ~3-hour hike through forest, grassland and swamp. The draw here are the wild rhinos that live in the park. Unfortunately, we saw none. We did see some crocs, monkeys and bugs, but nothing very astonishing. At one point our lead guide stopped us and pointed ...
