... wonderful villages up near the top that mainly service the ski traffic in winter and summer hikers. Two km from the summit of Col du Mollard is one such village, Albiez-Montrond. It can been seen in the pic from the summit view and where I filled my bidons.

... was still cold and the cloud was very low. I was itching for a ride so decided to tackle some local Cols near us.

They were some great climbs, Villerzembrun climb with its hairpins and early steep ramps out of St Michel and Col de Beau Plan with forest mist through the clouds on quiet roads and only a fool like me out riding them. We just finished the tour du Mont Blanc - 180km, 3 countries, 9 days! Also some sore feet by the end...
actually it was probably some of the nicest hiking we have ever done - stayed in some lovely hotels and mountain refuges, ate amazing food each day, good wine each night!
Think Andy was a bit de estates to be in Chamonix in summer rather than winter, but ...

Today the plan was to ride three or four cols, well that was the plan, the weather had other ideas.

I set off at 5.30am with just a light drizzle and if you have seen today's stage of the TDF you would know it became progressively worse.

I made it to Thones climbing the Col De Bluffy however by then I was soaked through. My rain booties and gloves had given up and became water capsules, I couldn't warm up and still had to climb over 1400 metres.

The Alps beat me ...

... went to the delicatessen across the road where we got some fabulous goose liver pate, then headed back to the patio behind the hotel to eat. Connie made do with a coffee out of the vending machine. I should mention that this hotel is a gem. Great layout with the parking and cycle storage, but beyond that the rooms were nice and the whole hotel had this thousand year old feel to it but still was quite modern and very well kept.
