On departure from our hotel in Iquitos we made our way to the marina (for want of a better word). From here we were transferred to a boat which took us 45 mins down the Amazon to Ceiba Tops Jungle Lodge. This place is BEAUTIFUL and the operators have a very slick operation going on here. Everyone is really helpful and what is even more exciting is that it is airconditioned which helps with the 98% humidity and flushing toilets - joy!. After a great buffet lunch spread (all made from local pro...
Amazon Jungle, Peru chainsawSaturday, 7th June Alison: We dragged ourselves out of bed at 3.00 for our transfer to the airport. Although we had our boarding passes, the bag drop queue went forever with what looked like the whole Peruvian army waiting to check in their weapons and bags for the flight. Luckily we were eventually let in front of them. Mike ended up sitting next to one of them on the flight and they were actually an elite group of Police off to Iquitos to compete in some special Police Games. We arrived ab...
Iquitos, Peru chalmersfamilyWhat a relief to be near sea level. We could breathe easily again and felt full of energy. We had good flights from La Paz to Iquitos with a transit in Lima airport. Iquitos is in northeast Peru and can only be reached by air or boat. It is generally considered the most populous city in the world that cannot be reached by road but there is nothing of particular interest in the town and we just stayed overnight before boarding an early morning river boat for the trip to our Amazon river lodge ...
Iquitos, Peru lizdavid... that I gave myself too little time between flights. I should´ve booked the earlier flight to be honest. So when I arrived in Lima, they were already getting final call, but my luggage hadn´t come on the carousel and I wouldn´t be let back to luggage claim if I had gone to the check-in desk. I missed the call by minutes actually. So I had to rebook for the later flight and paid 50 extra to do so. At least it gave me the opportunity to buy a book for my amazon boat ...
Iquitos, Peru bsuarez... Not sure why all the locals in the jungle paddle from the front of their canoes. We’ve always learned to steer from the back. We hiked for a short distance up the bank and into a very wet area that made use of our rubber overshoes we had been given. Within minutes we saw a true jungle swamp with lily pads as big as coffee tables. I really wanted to try walking out onto one of the lily pads (that always works on T.V) but Falcon warned that they can only hold 5kg ...
Iquitos, Peru bjergaardIn Iquitos
Final flew to Iquitos via Pucallpa Peru. Once
arriving in Iquitos Peru, we were approached by a man with a cab. His
name was Guido. He tried to sell us a jungle tour as we drove to our
hotel. He also tried to convince us we picked a bad hotel. We allowed
him to show us his choice of hotel after ...
Iquitos, Peru yjaquish... protest of a hundred spearmen march the streets. Seriously, they only have wooden spears, it felt very primative. I enter into the busy port city of about 30,000 inhabitants. I head directly to the port to find the cargo ship i will board into iquitos. It was a large cargo boat with 3 levels. The first had cows, food, and just random items. The second was a level of cramped people piled in with hammocks, and the third was the first class seats. I paid 40 ...
Iquitos, Peru davidayotte... He was selling candy - 8 for 1 sol ($25 cents mas o menos) so I bought some and gave that to the kids as well. It was clear that these kids were hungry. I think this is really the first time I have seen that and it was shocking and sad. It makes me want to do more but what can I do? I was glad I could share my spaghetti with them and give them some sweets...but what about tomorrow? It breaks my heart that in this world of plenty ...
Iquitos, Peru margreet98We arrived in Iquitos from Tabatinga on the fast boat which took pretty much the good part of the day, Iquitos is the largest city in the world that can not be reached by road, only plane or boat. We were greeted at the port by a million entreprenurial tuk tuk drivers who all wanted our business. We agreed on 5 soles which is a Pound and I later found out that we paid about double the price it should be, its always difficult when arriving in a new country to know whats the true ...
Iquitos, Peru jon-daniella... incredible display of nature. The river was as smooth as a mirror, perfectly reflecting the surrounding forest and the marvelous clouds sailing along in the sky. It was awesome to realize that we were probably the only ones there to enjoy this display of divine splendor, which would soon vanish, never to be seen in quite the same shapes and colors again.
Being in the rainforest is an overwhelming experience. The vastness of the forest, the ...
