Arequipa 655 Puerto Maldonado, Peru, 51-82-571-970-
We met up with our group tour to travel by plane to Puerto Maldonado to make our journey to the jungle region. With our 100% deet and positive attitudes, we were OFF. It took us 2 hours by plane (1.5 hours of flight time), 1 painful hour of a bus ride, and 3 hours on a boat to get to Cayman Lodge. The best thing about the trip was our lunch packed in a basket. It consisted of a tamal (kind of like a tamale but bigger), orange, boiled egg in shell, and some rice bread that was sort of sweet. W...
Puerto Maldonado, Peru laytonandjanaAfter a quick stop back in Cuzco, we were off via plane to Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to several protected areas in the Amazon Basin of Peru, for 2 days ights at an ecolodge in the middle of the rain forest. As you´ll see in the posted pics, our accommodations (approx. 2 hours up river from Puerto Maldonado) were about as simple as you can get: thatched huts with candles for light, a bed with a mosquito net and a little bit of running water from rain collection tanks for the bathroom. Our ...
Puerto Maldonado, Peru texaspeyton... we´re driving through the rainforest. It´s 5am and I haven´t slept a wink, but I have no intention of doing so and missing the lush forest that seems to stretch on forever all around us. It´s incredibly beautiful.
The journey turns out to be 17 hours long. We arrive in Puerto Maldonado at 10-30am. It´s boiling and incredibly humid. We tell our guide about our experience, and he says in the past this journey would take days, and that buses were often swept away in ...
... jungle won't be going down as the highlight of my trip!!!! But have to say that hunting for Caimen at night on the river and getting to enjoy the most amazing stars i have seen for ages were some high points for both of us - see i can see the good side as well.....
We left for an overnight in Lima . Not a lot to say about Lima apart from the fact we had dinner in a convent and the Nuns sang Ave Maria for us when we finished dinner. Next on to Chile ……

... and minerals, and various animals come to feed off it in order to reduce the toxins in their bodies, McCaws are a perfect case in point. They derive their bright colours from eating toxins and they visit the clay lick on a daily basis in order to survive. They are stunning birds, so brightly coloured and unmistakable against the green backdrop of the rainforest. We sat in a hide to watch them and were rewarded with up to 6 pairs that spent two hours flying around our position ...
Puerto Maldonado, Peru suenson_taylors... into our bungalow, it was time for lunch. I was very impressed with how good the food was and Nikolas ate everything. After lunch, we hung out in the hammocks in our bungalow before heading out to Monkey Island.
We crossed the river in a boat and walked for about ½ hour before reaching deep into the jungle. Our guide had brought bananas which he cut up and laid out for the monkeys. Within minutes we were surrounded by about 30 ...
... of tourists as being lazy and rich, who would much rather spend a buck than break a sweat. I am not lazy, nor am I rich, so I am sure I gave their schemas a little refinition.* On the way, a motorcyclist cruised past me and swiped my hat right off my head and rode off, waving his middle finger, back and forth as if tosay ¨Ah, ah, ah. You should know better to walk down the street in Puerto with a hat on.¨ I fell to my knees and looked to the ...
Puerto Maldonado, Peru glennrdoherty... Im not looking for bragging rights here, I want the real stuff.
Puerto is a dusty, hot, loud, small town with a huge sprawl to it. It appeared to be a perfect breeding ground for Dengue infested mesquitos. Puerto's main gig is gold, which is mined in the amazon not too far from the city. Within the past 3 years, the city has grown 3 fold. People looking to do some mining, and people from Cusco, Arequipa, Lima, and other city coming to set-up market in the ...
... provide candles and it gets warm enough during the day that a cold shower isn't so bad.
Our first day at the lodge is shot. We take a night hike, where our guide points out frogs, lizards and crickets. Oh so many crickets. Or maybe they were grasshoppers. I can't quite remember. She did tell us the difference. Unfortunately, that's all she could tell us. She knew very little. "What type of frog is that?" someone in our 11-membered group ...
