... before going for a long walk along the beach of an inlet where we watched fish jumping, seabirds on the sand spits and birds singing and playing in the trees. Monday 19th May "You're going to do WHAT !!!!!........................Part 5 OK, we're in New Zealand. What do we know about volcanoes? Big (ish), hot (often), unpredictable (mostly). So what are they like up close? White Island (Whakaari) is New Zealand's most active volcano, 27 miles offshore and ...

Even niksdoen in Whakatane

Hi ho, hi ho, off to Whakatane I go...

... or so! As I drove along I caught the sight of Mt Edgecumbe on the right - one thing that gets me about mountains in NZ is the way they just appear out of nowhere. You're just driving along happily one minute then you turn a corner and an almighty great mountain is suddenly there - you wonder why you haven't seen any of it before. Very strange. Must be a bit like Brigadoon.... I rolled into Whakatane at just before 1pm. It was a very ...

... and patterned walls. Just before sunset we pull into our Waikawa Bed and Breakfast for the night. We enjoy a lovely sunset over the waters of the Bay of Plenty while drinking wine with a couple from Canada who are also staying here. The owners, Shirley and Russ, spoil us with their hospitality, including giving us a sample of the local smoked fish.

"Don't buy pork- they're Jewish."

Hello All... Rachel and I have spent the past 5(?) days traveling around the Bay of Plenty region... lots to tell :) We were so happy to leave Auckland on Saturday morning--- not that it's a "bad" city- but it's just a city, and we were anxious to get on our way. We took the bus to Tauranga (with a lovely stop for 'morning tea' at a cute little tea house... NZ is very British in that way.) and made our way to our hostel- "Just the Ducks Nuts Backpackers"--- the owners, Gordon ...

... in a little open-air room and was blissful and we showed our appreciation by leaving a nice grimy scum-line around the edge of the tub which they're apparently still trying to shift with Jif extra-strength. We left Rotorua soothed in body and mind to head back towards Auckland but our state of inner-peace lasted until 50km from the city. We were due to stay in a caravan park near the airport tonight before driving to the Jet Inn Motel the next morning to bid farewell (and make ...
