A canyon that is not quite as Grand =)

... then sat on its banks to watch the sky change colour. The other tour group that was there had champagne (and champagne glasses). Well needless to say, our budget group did not have champagne but we had vita-snacks and the best company imaginable. There are some things that are better than champagne =) I know its hard to believe.

Splish Splash

... we have seen on the mountains has now changed to various hues of granite and the occasional quartz. There are many plants that have adapted to desert life and many have some poisonous attributes to them for both humans and animals. It’s their survival and defense mode in the desert.

Often called the "Land God made in anger" because of its stark, surreal landscapes, untamed wilderness, harsh environment, and rare beauty, Namibia was ...

Great day

... The dood said we probably not allowed to sleep there I said "this is Africa man" when he laughed, all was good. We even got a free feed from the World nomads tour group that felt sorry for us because we were eating 2 minute noodles, got a cold beer to. That night lightning storms were all around us, the night was as exciting as the day. I must of only slept for 2 hours.

Cricket in Africa

... began lugging our tents out and setting them up. As the cooking team began getting the food out a game of cricket broke out on the sandy expanse of ground outside the wall. Soon all the guys had joined and although Gabe called out to me to come play I was content to sit and muse with the girls. As we watched them dive comically, sending clouds of dust in the air, we ...

It never rains in the desert

... name sake of the park the Soussus Vlei (Dead Sea). It was a lot farther than I thought and stupidly I didn't bring enough water. I thought with 1L I should be fine but the desert seems to just suck the moisture right out of your body. You take a sip of water and within a minute your mouth is dry and your lips cracked. Not sure if it's the heat, dry air or what but Jaimie had to give me some of his as the going was hard just getting to the spot. We were hiking on a "road" that ...

2nd Largest Canyon in the world

... drove us the rest of the distance.

Fish River Canyon is one of the natural wonders of Africa. It is 500m deep and over 160km long and is the second largest canyon in the world. We watched the sunset over the canyon and even tried throwing some rocks over the side but we weren't able to hear them hit the bottom. Apparently it is possible to hike the canyon. It takes 8 days and is really difficult because there is no water for you to drink so you have to carry everything with you ...

Fish River Caynon

Today we drove to Fish river Canyon, the second biggest canyon after the Grand Canyon in the states. It was an amazing site to see. Nat says it was good but not as spectacular as the grand canyon. Here we seen the biggest grasshopper we have ever seen. It was so big it couldnt jump properly. We then drove to Orange River. This is ...

Day 170 - Namibia, Fish River Canyon - Scorpions

... sleep Oliver woke at 6:45 and went for a walk in an effort to regain strength in his knees and ankles. I chose to go back to sleep for another hour before... wait for it... getting up to go for a run with Katherine, Suzy and Sarah. Shock horror but after indulging to the max in South Africa I feel the time has come to shed the extra pounds and try find that fit active person I know is hiding there somewhere. Sarah acted as personal trainer and boy was she good. Putting ...

Location, development, exploitment

... it joins the Orange River, for being the starting point of many a hiking trail, and for the several hot water springs rich in beneficial minerals - is undergoing major redevelopment, and it's officially shut to the public. The sign I was mentioning just now as you turn westward on the D314 warns that there will not be any accommodation or fuel available on the site, advising to carry on to Hobas instead. Fair enough, but since we had plenty of petrol in our tank, lots of ...
