Into the wild - Canaima and Angel Falls

Canaima National Park is a magical place and our three day excursion has been one of the best we have undertaken and despite it being a couple of days late it was a great way to celebrate Julie's birthday. It is an adventure in itself getting to Angel Falls. We had to take two planes, including an hour in a small 6 seater Cessna that landed on a tiny airstrip in the Canaima National Park at the settlement of Canaima, followed by a four hour journey in a motorised dug out canoe flying up rapid...

Wonderful Waterfalls

Money continues to be a dominant feature of tour time in Venezuela – it seems to us that you cannot get anywhere or do anything without some sort of pay-out. We catch a plane from Margarita to Canaima in Southern Venezuela which requires another payout (departure tax), excess baggage – we were only allowed 10kgs each!!! and arrival tax to the Canaima National Park. The flight itself was an experience, we were totally unfazed by the fact that we were on e-tickets but very confused ...

Canaima y Salto Ángel, quatro días celestial

"In the peak of Auyan Tepuy, at more than 3,300 feet you can find the highest waterfall in the world… universally known as Angel Falls… one of the modern wonders of the world". The information on the back of the map of Canaima National Park doesn't really do Angel Falls justice, but then again I cannot think of words to capture its beauty either so I will not try. I just recommend you to go there!

The ...

... his 1001 time of doing it when I was there although I am not sure he was entirely happy about that! The Falls are stunning and the height absolutely overwhelming.....Pictures probably do not do it justice! The night spent there was the noisiest night I have spent in my life, Sleeping in a Hammock and listening to this, I can only describe as, clacking sound.....It was either something really big and scary or ...

Wet and wild at the Angel Falls

Getting to the Angel Falls is a mission. I took a bus from our previous base, Santa Elena, which took 14 hours. Then I got on a little six seater plane (the coolest thing ever, I felt like Mr Toad) to the small town of Canaima which is the base for visiting the Angels Falls and can only be reached by air. Then I got on a truck. Then I got on a boat and travelled upstream at speed for four hours. Then I got off, and trekked up a ...

Next stop Cuidad Bolivar where we stayed one night before departing for 2 night 3 day excursion of Angel Falls.

We went to the local airport predicting (or in Eugene´s case fearing) what type of plane we would be flying to the falls on. It was a pretty sophisticated operation but our pilot looked about 15 and the plane carried a total of 6 people (including the pilot). Eugene was a bit pale, particulary when the pilot was taxing to ...

Canaima

... they came running towards us. They were our pilots!! They were taking us to the airport to get on a plane without any pilots?? Everyone laughed, even the pilots! 2 pilots running to get on the jeep to go to the planes they are about to fly?! Only in south américa. Possibly the funniest thing we have ever seen. Flight back to Ciudad Bolívar was a bit sad. Sad that the best 3 days o four trip so far are over. Brazil hás a lot to live up to after stunning Venezuela!!

Angel Falls

... Guillermo (the person that Andreina put us in contact with) was waiting at the bus terminal. He had arranged a posada for the night and after explaining to us the itinerary for the next morning dropped us there. Compared to the other posadas this was extremely different (sadly we didn't get the name) it had more the look of a hotel than an actual posada, and even though the surroundings weren't the safest, inside was very well organized and the people ...

Wet and wild at Angel Falls

... is open so we go in. We are alarmed to discover than none of the desks or offices bear the name that is on our ticket. We are learing than travelling equals waiting but about 5 hours later we are on the runway while the signal lady searches for our pilot and soon we are taking off in the smallest plane we have been in. 5 seater Cesna (inclding pilot) to Canaima, reminding us of our honeymoon flight to the Okavango. It is a stunning flight over the ...
