My Birthday in the Okavanga Delta!

... down and turn around a lot. It was amazing how close we were able to come before they noticed us and sped up, eventually galloping off. As we stood there we saw three more coming up the path. In the background were a herd of zebra. And then it was time for breakfast, we headed back to the campsite and had French toast, what a great day so far! Apparently one of our other group’s had been charged by a male lion from ...

Watch out for the Crocs!

... at one point we got stuck and our poler along with another man had to get out and push us. I wasn't too keen on offering to get out myself as the waters are also home to crocodiles and hippos and were too reedy and murky to see what might be coming our way. I had no idea how you’re supposed to react if you see either one.

At our first stop we discovered the reason we were sitting lower then everyone ...

Moremi, the pride of southern Africa

This was it... the final destination of our African wildlife adventure. We couldn't be more excited. We'd seen and experienced so much in Chobe National Park and now here we were carving our way along the dangerous, sandy roads to the famous Moremi Game Reserve. Perched on the tail of the wildlife oasis that is the Okavango Delta (the world's largest inland delta), Moremi is widely regarded as one of Africa's premier wildlife reserves. It all promised so much yet came ...

Xakanaxa - the tip of the Mopane Tongue

... disappointed. Luckily the game drive yesterday had yielded lots of hippos so we didn't feel too cheated. Xakanaka was a good campsite with working but cold showers - there had been no water at North Gate yesterday evening so we were happy with anything. The pitches are roughly marked and it took a few minutes to work out which one was ours. Unfortunately the bins had been ravaged by hyena and rubbish was ...

North Gate and that infamous bridge

... tipping out his guests - how rude but then we had heard how unhelpful the Private Lodges can be. The car drove better than we could have dared hope and we made North Gate in fairly good time. As we got there I could see there was a problem on the bridge beyond the Ranger Post. A young female ranger came out and told us a lorry had broken down on the bridge earlier in the day and that nobody could get in or out. We couldn't believe it, we had got here and now we couldn't ...

Okovango Delta

... out canoes called Mokoros which are basically tree trunks chiseled out to create a canoe like shape and padded out with straw. They didn't look the most sturdy or waterproof of vessels so we took heed in the advice to stay as low as possible, not rock the dug out at all and not to make any sudden movements. Our punter then proceeded to cast off and we were on our way to the campsite in the middle of the delta. The Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta in the ...

Okavanga Delta

... for a late breakfast and then hit the swimming hole again. Which more time to kill we ended up getting antsy which led to mud fights, mokoro tipping and throwing almost every local mokoro poler in the water with us. At 1700 we headed out into the mokoros again for a sunset cruise. We returned to camp in the dark for dinner and then games and traditional singing and dancing from the polers and guides. This night also ended with too much ...

Mokoros in the Delta

... on the mokoros to the awaiting trucks. We spent the rest of the day and that night at our Maun campsite. We had been looking forward to the Okavango Delta as it was one of our main (optional) excursions that we wanted to see and participate in. For the cost of the excursion, we were disappointed with what we received and didn't feel the price was justified. But we did enjoy the time on the mokoros. Onto Namibia!! - Jeremy and Suzanne
