The Kruger safari experience

... who would pass by the hotel going to the Sabie river. We saw many elephants pass while we had lunch on the Veranda a great memory. This area has yielded evidence in the form of cultural artifacts, rock art, and more than 300 archaeological sites, that prehistoric man, Stone Age man, Iron Age and Bushman ...

Berg en Daal Restcamp Kruger

... was very nice and in a lovely picturesque setting. There is a nice rhino walking trail along the perimeter of the camp, and a good shop. This camp has won the Kruger Best Restcamp Award for the last 3 years. The camping area is large but much nicer than Skukuza. There were good ablution blocks, and laundry and washing up areas. There is a restaurant, internet café, cafeteria, and an excellent shop. Within the camping grounds there ...

All creatures great and small

... road we reached Crook’s Corner, the meeting point of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, where we looked out over the Limpopo river marking the border. Supposedly, a previous hangout for shady characters (poachers, slave traders etc.) who could quickly jump the border depending on which authorities they most needed to evade!

And so we bade a sad, almost tearful (in Rachel's case - clearly Mike just had a bit of ...

Kruger Park Safari

After returning to Lusaka from Mazabuka, the three of us ran like mad to get ready and head to the airport to catch a flight to Jo'burg. The next day, our week-long camping tour through Kruger Park, the Drakensburg Escarpment, Botswana and Victoria Falls would start. We spent the night at the fantastic Mbizi backpackers in Jo'burg. All of us absolutely loved it there and wished we had more time to stay in the ...

South Africa is Beautiful!

... there is so much more to tell. Today I went on my first safari game drive and it was awesome. Last night I slept in a hut in the African bush and was lulled to sleep by the sounds of the wilderness. I don't know when I'll be able to send another update. We asked my tour guide if the hotel will have internet access and he said... what...internet? You're lucky if you have electricity! Until next time! Lori

Locked in Swaziland

Well we almost got locked down overnight in Swaziland, but they couldn't keep us down.  Road construction, detours and nightime driving hazards be damned!  As long as they keep the border open an extra hour for us we can do anything!  We will always have Swaziland.

Joburg to Kruger

We left our Johannesburg hostel at 6.30am on board our home for 2 weeks - an overlander truck. A mercedes engine with an aluminium container on the back. Its got big windows (thankfully they open) but even at 6.30am it was like a greehouse in it! We met the 7 others on our trip... 2 german boys - Florian and Renee and 5 Dutch students - Lianne, Egert, Milou, Christa and Ninke. The first part of the trip went without ...

Laughing Hyenas and Other Tails* from the Bush

*The Original title was "Laughing Hyenas and Other Tails [sic] from the Bush," but this exceeded the character limit. Written by Andy, brackets courtesy of Lynne. This entry is written on Friday, June 16, but will be posted a few days later. First, I shall begin with a few housekeeping items as follows: -We owe our warm and heartfelt gratitude to our devoted readership. We are just shy of one month into our journey, and I failed to mention that some time ago we eclipsed the 500 ...

Racing to find wild dogs and cheetahs

... there was one behind us. As Erica turned round she excitedly exclaimed it was a jackal, it actually turned out to be a spotted hyena! It was super inquisitive and he started crossing the bridge towards us, before losing his nerves as he got close to us and retreating back to the safety of the bush. We saw a whole ...

what else could happen?

... here to make this move to South Africa right, and I just end up finding a lot of brick walls that I run smack dab into. It has been an emotionally frustrating experience so far. I thought I came here to help, but I think I have made more of a nuisance to most peoples lives, so i will do things on my own from now on, if it is too much trouble for them. Yes it takes away from the peace corps philoshophy, but right now, I need to find something that is going to make me happy, right?
