IT'S (NO) FUN TO STAY AT THE YMCA

... but making an effort to meet the locals, we spent an evening at a reggae night with Jacks and a few others from around the town of Kololi. Cool night but not surprisingly it ended in talk of money that makes me uncomfortable and sad to say the least.

Life looked up again after a deserved day of chilling as we went to Abuko Nature Reserve, a small area of amazing vegetation and very interesting animals and birds just ...

THE GAMBIA GAMBLE

... fun and games ensued as we overlanded all the way down through Koalack and Karang and eventually ended up in Barra, beside the ferry port to take us to Banjul.

Although Senegal hugs The Gambia and a lot of people regard the two countries as one and the same, seeing the scenes of rural life and the totally tropical terrain of this new country emphasised its unique ...

DIVING INTO DAKAR

... was lovely and leaving wasn't easy at all.

Anyway, we had
diving in Dakar to distract us and so soon settled into the incredible
Oceanium right beside the sea and sorted ourselves out with a
dive...back out at gorgeous Goree...couldn't keep us away eh! Being
back beneath the waves was wicked and as ever worlds away from any
experience on land. Lovely!

XXX

XXX
... next campement right on the edge of the river. absolutely stunning location! Did some swimming, canoeing and relaxing and not much else! No other guests there so the guides were being overly helpful but overall it was a nice couple of days.
After one night in the wilderness we headed back to the village and stayed for one more night before heading back up the coast to Toubab Dialao. The Smiling Coast

... of affairs, but I wish that they could bottle it and sell it - they would be deservedly rich and the world would be noticably happier! In the end, our trip was far too short - just five days squeezed in between work commitments, but we were wonderfully relaxed in the chic boutique hotel, Ngala Lodge soaking up the rays, swimming in the cool pool, and strolling along the beautiful coastline.

Christmas Day with an (African) twist

... a small amount of cultural sensitivity goes quite a long way. In terms of local food culture, I highly rated the chicken and beef domoda and yassa dishes, which were relatively simply put together, but did not compromise on the overall taste factor, and since a substantial portion of the country's revenue is generated by the fishing industry, freshly-caught fish is commonplace. A miniature version of a Gambian drum ...

... number 139 of traveling Africa; check the tread of tires before taking public transport. Two kids in rags appear from nowhere. The 12 year old boy is an expert in roadside mechanics. His business is to wait patiently next to N2 for his customers arrival, and a lucrative business it is. Soon enough we are moving down the road. The driver has to make a stop for a new spare. While pulling off the highway to the garage, a large ...

Alittle change of plans...

... real food (we hadn't had a real meal in close to 48 hours), and it felt GREAT! It was a wonderful way to end the trip. The room was right on the water and we had a beautiful view of the sun setting. Unfortuately the camera's batteries died so no photos were recorded, but it was the best place of the trip. Back to my words: To be able to take a deep breath and relax was one of the greatest gifts, espically with someone you love so much. All i remember was realizing how lucky we were...
