The Reception

... fed Jeremy a piece. She turned to Amy whose face had a fake smile painted on to cover here horror. Amy is a vegetarian for ethical reasons. She took a small piece from Happy and managed to smile a little. Jeremy walked to Happy's family to deliver a piece of meat. Happy walked over to us and said, 'One of you has to eat some.' Tim, the other vegetarian, ate a small piece in solidarity with Amy. Dinner was next. I ate no meat. The evening ended with bishop wrapped in ...

Culture Fatigue

... and boxing. Angora vs. Italy in boxing. Boxing is not my sport. I wish they'd show swimming or gymnastics or track. Time is different. Nothing happens on time or according to plan like Americans expect. You don't get clear answers to questions like how far, when, how much. Instead you hear not far, early or very early, not much. And when you pay for something and someone says, "I'll pay you back" don't assume you will be paid back ...

Kitchen Party

... the wedding. Happy cut the cake and fed a piece to Amy. Amy then took a piece and fed it to Happy. Linda translated what the MC said as all the women laughed, "Let's see how the white people do it!" Between each event, the women danced, Blue Lady leading the pack. Sometimes she's come running out, arms up to dance and the song stopped. She's look disappointed and return to her chair. Food was outside. A basin of water and dry soap was at ...

Drive to Dodoma

... appeared on the horizon, the scent of cooking fires in the air. Each town had speed bumps, the largest I've ever seen. The Bishop sometimes forgot about us in back and sped over the bumps so our bodies lurched up and our heads hit the roof. "Sorry," he'd say. After one bad speed bump we heard the sound of metal scraping road. Soon after, the car slowed and I heard the Bishop and Zakajo mutter, "This is not good ...

Selous Game Reserve

... Also came across a very grumpy elephant who charged us. Got back very happy indeed. When asked what we had seen by the camp manager Pat annouced Prairie Dogs! The guys mouth just dropped open. He thought we had discovered a new species for Africa! Gecko has now taken to following Pat around despite the fact she shouts at it. It sat with us on the veranda catching insects attracted by the Tilley lamp. The gecko and Pat were trying to push each other off the camp chair.

Selous Safari

... Poor girl missed the safari and had Malaria :( She is getting better now but still is not feeling to well. Apparently most people get Malaria before leaving...SO why did I get the medication? Oh well, I guess it's like the flu if they know its Malaria before you have had it to long. If you have it to long then its dangerous. Gesh, time flies. I think I need to get off soon :) Now that I have the picture ability I will try to get some Bagamoyo pictures up!

The Ilula Orphan Program

... the tenth anniversary of the program which now has grown to accomodate a center for about 40 girls aswell as a foster and sponsor program for more than 500 orphans. Imagine being in a small town in the middle of Tanzania and being surounded by that many children who are parentless! My journey began from my friend George's house where I stayed for three nights with his family. He was a lawyer that I met in Kigoma. It was wonderful, a ...

a muddy day

... km away) to watch the game. One guy, a Norwegian here on a 16-week Swahili course with his wife and 16-month old son, was also a die-hard Liverpool fan. He said we could all go in his Landy if we would drive. It was the perfect solution since we didn't want to pack up Foxy's tent, only to set it up again a few hours later. Matt promised the guy that he never did the drinking and driving thing, and that he was a safe driver and would be extra ...
