If the Muslim conversion progressed from west to east (1500s or so) , why then is Lombok Muslim and Bali not, given that Bali sits to the west of Lombok. While you are pondering that, given the short distance between the two islands (32km) why is the landscape and the people noticeably different ?

... The area that was lush and green last March was now barren, dry and dusty; such a vast difference the rains make. We headed down to Mushroom Beach to get some lunch. As we waited we watched the day trippers from Bali line up for a banana boat ride....very funny watching them getting off and getting dunked. Did you know you can get rash vests with hoods? ... offers of sarongs and descended a long stone stair into a valley. On either side of the bubbling stream were cliffs with large shrines cut into them. It looked as if a pool had once occupied the now dry region in front of the cliff face.

The long climb back up the stairs was hot work, but we soon cooled off on the breezy ride back to the guesthouse. Both temple sites had turned out to be ...

... was cold and well needed after the walk. N.B. it probably sounds like we drink a lot of beer. This is because the water and juice is generally as expensive and not particularly trustworthy, the coffee is good but the milk isn’t really milk, and wine is pretty much non-existent - so beer is what you drink!

We asked for the bill and it took so long to arrive that we ended up having to run to the pick up point. Thankfully this shuttle wasn’t so ...
