Osa Peninsula, Oh So Pretty!

... to start at the La Leona Ranger station on the outskirts of Carate. We were going to walk 20 km to the Serena ranger station starting at 6am on the Sunday and spend the night in Serena, walking the 20km back on the Monday. We wanted to be in Nicaragua by the Wednesday hence the rushing of the hike. Our main concern was the river crossings we had to do, three major rivers in all with a lot of little streams along the way. The major rivers have crocs swimming in them, some up to ...

Quest for the elusive Tapir

... a whole day just preparing for our walk as we needed to take food, water and sleeping stuff for 3 days.

The walk is 8 hours across beach and jungle to a ranger station right in the middle of the park. Here they give you a bunkbed and you can buy dinner, but apart from that, it{s pretty sparse. Normally an 8 hour walk would have you starting pretty early but this one involves a 2 hour ride in the back of truck before you can even start it. The truck doesn{t leave ...

Corcovado Jungle Trek, day 2/3

... back and forth and up and down the river; and in the surrounding jungle, monkeys were swinging through the trees. We had now seen all four species of monkey found in Corcovado - white-faced capuchin, spider monkey, howler monkey and squirrel monkey. We also caught a brief glimpse of a tapir in some reeds at the water's edge. But even if we hadn't seen a single creature, a near-silent canoe trip up a river in dense jungle is an ...

We convinced our new friends Luis and Jose to take us on a boating trip where we caught 6 yellow fin tuna (apparently beginners luck, we have videos by the way), and played with about 20 dolphins near Cano Island!!!!! it was amazing!!! We made friends with a girl named Kim and went on a hike with her through the rainforest. So far we´ve seen macaws and toucans, we ...

... some brown turkey-ish birds with mohawks (cassaros); lizards everywhere, including the Jesus lizard that ran across the water; an anteater that climbed up a tree when it saw us; coatis everywhere - they look like pointy raccons crossed with cats; a very red small deer with a funny looking face; spider monkeys in the trees; white faced capuchin monkeys that threw stuff at us; scarlet macaws flying around in pairs and squawking at each other like old married ...

Broken fingers and string ray bites

... blood flowing down his left foot. A sting ray had got him. He said it was quite painful. We brought him to the clinic where there were two other people getting treated for the same problem. The solution? Hot water mixed in with a green plant called 'Mother-in-law-tongue'. You mix them together, keep the water hot, and let the wound marinate for a good hour. Looked to be quite painful, apparently the pain runs up your leg ...

Fo(u)ray into the Foret

... the poor countries of Central American, and why these people are just not as industrious as those in America (Hint: it involves a joke about white rice and brown rice). He had a neat personal story all about pulling himself up by his bootstraps but the mildly racist philosophy he preached was a bit much to take. Daniel tried to argue the post-colonial historiographic viewpoint but Jerry showed very little interest and kept bringing the thread ...
