          Stunning Location

Stunning location, with decent facilities. We never had the chance to enjoy the pool area, but it looked inviting. The included nature walk was excellent. Rooms with shared bathrooms are comfortable, and there was never a problem with waiting to use them. Breakfast was decent with a varied selection, and it was nice to take coffee after outside, overlooking the bird feeding station. I'd skip the overpriced and average restaurant for dinner, however.

          A beautiful natural spot!

Arenal Observatory Lodge is based the foot of the Arenal volcano and just next to this national park. The views are simply gorgeous but what I do really enjoyed is the wildlife in this property. It is a secluded location, about 22 kms from La Fortuna town, where the central mountain range divides it from Monteverde Cloud forest allowing to be one of the most important places for bird watching in Costa Rica.

It's my birthday!!! We wake up to a thumping noise out on our balcony - the coati family have come to visit. Some cards to open and then a leisurely breakfast before my birthday treat - a day at tabacon. We get the hotel shuttle service to the tabacon hot springs where we will spend the day, when we arrive it is pouring with rain, we check in and …

Still raining. It's rained all night, yesterday's clothes are still wet, oh well we'll make the best of it. Today we are being picked up to do the sky walk, tram and trek. So we're picked up just after 10 and taken by bus to sky adventures, we're given wrist bands for transportation and tickets for the trek and walk, sky trek first. So we go and …

I know we're in a rain forest but we could've stayed at home for weather like this! The hotel runs a free guided walk starting at 8.30 every morning so we decide to take advantage of this today as we have activities planned for the next 2 days. So after breakfast we gather with the masses (well about 16 people) in the rain for the walk. The rain …

So today we try the jeep-boat-jeep transfer from monteverde to arenal. We're picked up after an early breakfast and are joined in the minibus by 5 others, all backpackers staying in hostels in Santa Elena, the roads around Monteverde are all unpaved, mucky tracks, full of potholes so we have a long bumpy ride ahead, we stop briefly to take photos …

          Another big steaming hole

The guidebook says this town, La Fortuna, is horrible. You will be accosted by thousands of touts and you wont find anywhere to stay. Its supposed to be one of Costa Ricas top tourism destinations as it sits below an active volcano that has been known to spew out molten rock. We were on the quest to see lava flowing once again. When we finall...
