      Stunning Location

Stunning location, with decent facilities. We never had the chance to enjoy the pool area, but it looked inviting. The included nature walk was excellent. Rooms with shared bathrooms are comfortable, and there was never a problem with waiting to use them. Breakfast was decent with a varied selection, and it was nice to take coffee after outside, overlooking the bird feeding station. I'd skip the overpriced and average restaurant for dinner, however.

      A beautiful natural spot!

Arenal Observatory Lodge is based the foot of the Arenal volcano and just next to this national park. The views are simply gorgeous but what I do really enjoyed is the wildlife in this property. It is a secluded location, about 22 kms from La Fortuna town, where the central mountain range divides it from Monteverde Cloud forest allowing to be one of the most important places for bird watching in Costa Rica.

      Human Soup

I'm not a huge fan of hot springs - sure, they're a nice spot for a soak after a long day on the ski slopes, and they feel great for those achy muscles and weary bones. But in North America, more often than not, those hot springs are a nasty human soup, a filthy mixture of humanity, dead skin, and floating band aids! They've never felt like a …

Tico is what Costa Ricans call themselves, and Tico Time is a bit of a running joke, a reference to Costa Ricans' penchant for being laid back and late. In a way it's what makes a visit here so appealing, the lazy approach to life that makes a vacation so relaxing and enjoyable. But we have a theory about Tico Time - the reason that Costa Ricans …

The rear driver-side tire is hanging precariously over the edge of the 6-foot ditch, and Maria, standing in said ditch, is pushing with all her might and yells "Ready!". I use both of my feet, left on the brake and right on the gas, to slowly apply acceleration while slowly releasing the brake so we don't slide backward even 1 millimeter. I cross …

We birded the grounds around Arenal Observatory Lodge one last time before packing up to leave. We picked up a Boat-billed Flycatcher, Collared Aracari, Scaly-breasted Hummingbird, and Rufous-tailed Hummingbird. I think the realization hit Frank that the tour was drawing to a close, and as we walked toward the car he exclaimed, “The party&# …

A volcano, an ant swarm, and a tumble

Yesterday we headed into the Arenal Volcano area, with lush green landscapes and thick forests. We stopped for lunch in La Fortuna, a pleasant little town at the base of the volcano, and then birded our way toward the lodge. We picked up a Green Honeycreeper, Broad-billed Motmot, and many bird sounds back in the brush that we were unable to see. …
