Arenal Observatory Lodge is based the foot of the Arenal volcano and just next to this national park. The views are simply gorgeous but what I do really enjoyed is the wildlife in this property. It is a secluded location, about 22 kms from La Fortuna town, where the central mountain range divides it from Monteverde Cloud forest allowing to be one of the most important places for bird watching in Costa Rica.

The guidebook says this town, La Fortuna, is horrible. You will be accosted by thousands of touts and you wonīt find anywhere to stay. Itīs supposed to be one of Costa Ricaīs top tourism destinations as it sits below an active volcano that has been known to spew out molten rock. We were on the quest to see lava flowing once again.
