Historical Traveler Reviews Arco Iris Lodge Santa Elena
Very Nice but One Small Complaint
The location was great, the rooms were very clean but a bit austere. The grounds were very nice.
However, we went to the Monteverde area specifically to do bird watching and were told by the hotel staff that no birding guides were available. We made our plans accordingly and then found out later that indeed that several guides were available but the hotel simply did not try to contact them. If you are birders, I suggest that you either find your own guide ahead of time or insist that the hotel find you one even if they say that there are none available.
We found a great birding guide on our own whose name was Maria.
We loved this place
We stayed here in March 2003 for three wonderful days/nights. We had a cabin which was spotless and comfortable. The grounds were very pretty, lots of bird watching opportunities right from our deck.
Breakfast was excellent and the staff were very helpful, arranging for guides and/or tours.
The lighting in the cabin was a little dim, but this seemed to be par for the course in all of Costa Rica.
Would love to go back sometime.
The location of this lodge is superb, up a steep hill but slightly away from the small town. The first thing I notice were the beautiful grounds. The staff was generally very nice and were helpful in booking the many tours offerred in the area. There advice was dead on for just about everything they told us. I think they even advised us on tours that could better stretch our budget. The breakfast seemed okay, but at nearly $7.00 USD it was a lot of money for the area. The rooms were really charming and clean. The bathroom was absolutely huge with a funky shower. It was also very private and you couldn't hear anyone else. The room did lack good seating and decent lighting. Also if you are someone that gets cold be sure to make use of the extra blankets they provide, because it does get chilly in the rooms at night. I would stay here again in a minute.
Great place, reasonable prices
Nicely landscaped grounds, great location. We had a nice little cabin up on a hill with good privacy. The inside was simple, but very comfortable and attractive. Staff was pleasant and very helpful. Highly recommended.
Good Value with Helful Owners
Good value with location close to town. The front desk is exceptionally helpful with arranging tour. Really quite satisfied.
We rented the house for two days and thought it was the best value for your money in the Monteverde area. The staff was very helpful in arranging tours for us. The main downside to the hotel is the fact that there are no screens on the windows, creating issues with bugs.
Can be a very good value -- check your room first!
Helpful owners and staff. Very nice library in the office and a really great location. We didn't get much sleep the first night -- the small room we took first had a couple problems. First, it was very windy and every 10 minutes or so a tree outside the room would smash against the corrugated metal siding, which sounded like a kettle drum going off next to your head. Secondly, it was really smoky and my wife spent the whole night sneezing. I don't mind a little smokiness, and it's hard to avoid when travelling, but this was REALLY smoky. So we switched to a room in one of their cabinas, which had no problems at all. Except that it was more expensive.
Decent and recommended
We stayed at the Arco Iris around Christmas time. The grounds were pretty and well-kept and the lodges were spartan but clean. I recommend this place. One staff member I perceived to be aloof, although it could have just been me and that we were from different cultures. Others were warm and helpful.
Attack dog on grounds
When we arrived 2 of the beds and 1 of the rooms were flooded. The hotel owner offered clean sheets. There is a white dog on the grounds that growled at several of the students and attacked a dog that followed students from the town. I will not return. And hope this note avoids others the displeasure of staying at this hotel. Also had 6 wolf spiders in my room.
Great place to stay in town
This was a nice place to stay withing walking distance of the small downtown, where several restaurants and shops are. The owner is a very friendly german woman who speaks English, Spanish, German and probably more.
The rooms are sparse but clean, the grounds are pretty and well maintained. A great deal for the price!
