Ships ahoy!

... two hours later. This just irked me so I went over to the guy and told him to put it in the garbage. He said the garbage was full. I told him then change it. He just kind of looked at me stupidly as I walked away. We asked a couple employees what time the boat was going to leave and if it would leave today. Nobody could give a straight answer. A couple of people wanted refunds, but the lady who sold tickets was ...

on search of anacondas and caiman

... like to get zapped by an electric eel (and people wonder why women live longer than men) but they turned out to be electric-proof and nothing happened. Falcon got the hook out after a couple of minutes and timidly kicked the eel back into the water.

We returned to our spots, caught a couple more throw-back fish, and we heard Falcon groan, “Aayyy..otra!” (Arrgh! Another?!) as he pulled up a second electric eel. He pulled this one off in ...

fishing for hawks

... likes fish, but we caught 22 of them the night before and half of them were cooked for lunch. What else were we going to do with them? As the two of us forced ours down, Andy and the guides ate well.

We found out what else we could do with the fish after lunch. Bait. After lunch we got back in the canoe, took some rods, and paddled up the Ucayali again. The wolf fish along the shorelines at night, but the piranhas are active during the day. Gedrani cut up a ...

Cruisin down a river

... in the Amazon. The first night will be at a lodge, the last 3 camping. We have heard stories of monkeys, sloths, caymen, snakes-one supposedly a boa 10m long (fish tail??) and best of all a jaguar that got spooked while eating a caymen.

Wish us luck-and that we don’t get eaten. And I hope we have some amazing stories to tell for ourselves when we come back in five days. And I hope we have a good photo of that boa…from outside it’s belly.

... through an eye dropper. He is by far the most adorable creature you have ever seen. He clinches to my arm barely or my fingures when i take him around town. Since the market is disgusting, last night i bought some antibacterial soap and a soft tooth brush and gave him a good scrub. He doesnt care for baths much, but which animal does.
Belen Market & Floating City

... strong! But I kept my pants on. The market can be difficult for some because of the traffic in exotic, and sometimes endangered, animals. I saw live monkeys for sale as well as turtle meat and other wild meats that I couldn't identify. It's another glimpse at the reality of a totally ...

Welcome to Iquitos?

... 5000 Km. to down the Amazon. I walked around Iquitos a bit taking in the sights... Like most Latin American towns and cities, there is a central Plaza, the Plaza de Armas with cathedral facing it. One of the main attractions here is the Casa de Fierro (Iron House). The house was built by Gustav Eiffel for the Paris Exhibition in 1889 (along with another monument for which he is more famous). One of ...

The Shaman in the Amazon! - Day 93

... along the river in the full moonlight, yes it's a full moon, is that an omen! Then to my surprise a large fish jumped straight into the boat, is this another omen! Weird! We reached a little group of huts lit by candle light after 15 minutes or so. We moored the boat and entered one of the huts where the shaman unpacked the ceremonial paraphernalia. The shaman's toolkit consisted of the Ayahuasca in a plastic bottle, a small wooden cup, a pipe with pure tobacco, a ...

Allpahuayo Mishana Reserve: it ain't Disneyland!

It had been four years since my first and last true jungle expedition, when I spent five days in the Pacaya Samiria reserve. So I jumped at the opportunity to travel to the Allpahuayo Mishana Reserve with some foreign visitors in January. Five days travelling up the river Nanay. My friend Bill had recommended going there, as our visitors were keen on spotting monkeys, but not so keen on being punctured by legions of mosquitoes. "The water is too ...

A Trip Into the Pacaya Samiria Reserve

... try very hard; dinner kind of just jumped right onto our plate. Fishing for piranhas was as easy as taking candy from a baby! A little piece of chicken on a hook and the piranhas all but seemed to fight over which would finally take the bait. In a short while we caught ourselves another night's dinner. When I was thirsty, my guide cut down a piece of a giant vine and held it up straight. Much to my surprise, even though it looked like a ...
