These forests have supplied the indigenous communities with a treasure trove, including lumber, food, drinks, spices and medicine. The landscape of the province is greatly varied with fertile plains and rice fields, rich in minerals, timber and farmland, its tropical climate and geographical character provide shelter for fauna and flora that are as diverse as ...
Mindanao, Koronadal City, Philippines aliawan... activities on the streets, the myriad of steetvendors on the road and sidewalks, beggars holding their hands up, grabbing my shirts and hands, asking for money or food. The humid warmth that spreads like a blanket around my body that felt like the temperature in a Turkish bath. All this together with the smell of burning charcoal, barbeque, diesel, firewood and the emission of the many multi-colored vehicles on the road gave me the impression of an organized chaos ...
Mindanao, Koronadal City, Philippines aliawanPopped down to Kalibo to find accomodation for the upcoming Ati-Atihan festival, just in case we got here in 3 weeks and it was full or the prices were crazy. First place we went to was 13500 pesos (~200 pounds) for 3 nights for 2 people. The 2nd place was 3000 pesos (~45 pounds) for the same. I bet you can't guess which one we went for?

I know Mindanao has another, peaceful side; this island is home to a very diverse group of people, valuing peace and harmony above anything else, with a common desire for peace and stability. Catholic settlements are largely spread within and alongside the Muslim communities. Many indigenous tribes are settled here, including T'boli, Yakan. Moro, Tausug, Maranao, Samal and Badjao among others ...

It was a pleasant drive through verdant countryside, some of it along the coast, and the second half over hills. We were not sure yet whether we would go as far as Lake Sebu, and I was a bit worried about the accommodation situation there, as Yoong seems to have an allergic reaction to wooden village houses (as we found on our trip to Guizhou in China). However, when we arrived at GenSan, the bus ...

It was sunny, hot and an altogether pleasant walk. At one point we passed some soldiers (with guns) and asked if we could have a picture taken with them. While there were lots of fumes from the buses and tricycles, watching the cars slowly go by was well worth the walk. As we walked into town the crowds got thicker, as did ...
Kalibo, Visayas, Philippines ksuter... Allan went back to his aunt's and I went home to bed. My stomach was just turning...something I ate I guess, likely breakfast at the resort. Slept fitfully, and next morning when I woke up,....I made a run for the toilet....and boy did I puke! Rest of the day was pretty weak and not really able to move very much, just sleepy most of the day, but feeling much better.... Worst part was that this was the start of Ati Atihan in Kalibo, one of ...

Once through the initial security - we had to have our luggage xrayed on the way into the building....we were in the check in area. Very crowded and many many lineups. The luggage allowance for the domestic flights is less, so we had a pay an overweight charge. After getting some local currency at the money changers, we ...
