Set off bright and early on glorious sunny but chilly day and drove south west on a dead straight freeway for two hours. Only saving grace was the colourful scenery, the leaves all colours from green to yellow to red to brown to purple! We then went off onto smaller roads and followed Lake Champlain down over bridges and islands - so pretty. Stopped at a typical diner and had a huge breakfast-like meal ...

    Montreal to Port Kent

... an eternity. We arrived around 7.30 and grabbed some dinner.

We left the restaurant around 8.30 pm and at this stage we had no hotel booked for the night, no phone coverage, no detailed map to get us out of the maze that is the Adirondacks, it was dark and rain was pelting. For some reason our hangovers kicked in again.

We managed to get out of the area, find a major road ...

... from NYC. Perfect meeting point after a 534 mile drive. It is located in the far north east of the Adirondacks and we entered from the south west. It was slow going on back roads for a few hours but the views of the various lakes and mountain ranges were stunning.

We arrived exhausted around 9 pm, had a couple of glasses of wine and hit the hay as we all knew that we had a long weekend ahead of us.

... complete with a room dedicated to Kate Smith who summered in Lake Placid for 40 years and whose body is buried here.

Nice to see "mountains" again I am such a western mountain snob as Sraddha says. It is pretty, however not compelling to stay overnight so we keep heading east and north. We stop to buy some fresh corn at a roadside stand then make our way up to Plattsburgh RV park. We first stopped at the state park ...

Had another great breakfast in the hotel. Different food this time as it included pancakes, sausage patties and good home fries.

We packed up and left around 9a. The weather was good, cloudy and a bit on the cool side. Driving through Vermont is just beautiful, saw lots of mountains. We can only imagine the sites when the leaves change ...
